Is a local network required before setting up VPN?

Thanks. I have essentially done what that article describes. Also have opened up port 1723 and 47.
ZoneAlarm was blocking (2) 192.168.1.100 entries which were added to trusted zone but I am still not able to connect.

Any word of wisdom would be greatly appreciated.

If you are using the VPN across the Internet, you need to use Public addresses In most domestic cases that means port forwarding at the router and using the external IP address of the router as your destination.

I wasn't using a router but I have one to use; however, neither my dial up nor Sprint EV-DO USB connections are connected to the router. Does that matter?

[I had Linksys router networking desktop to laptop in apprehension of installing satellite ISP but changed my mind and went with Sprint Mobile Broadband, which cannot go through the router. Network has been disabled and router disconnected in attempt to get VPN to work.]

No, you don't have to use a router. It is getting rare for people not to use one :).

However, the fact you are using a 192.168.0.0 address tells me you are using a router as some point - even if none of the kit you are using is labelled as a "router ". Routers are the devices that connect IP networks together. Something is connecting your private 192.168.0.0 network to the internet. It could be your PC, or something labelled as just a modem - but whatever it is, it is acting as a router.

The key thing is still the same - you need to be using the external IP address of the device (modem?) connecting to the internet and not the 192.168.0.0 address.

I had the Linksys router hooked up when first trying but realized that the modem was not passing through so could not expect much from it but trouble and disconnected it along with disabling the local network.

The IP of my Sprint modem is never the same from one connection to another. The DNS is constant if that could be used.

ZoneAlarm is allowing Sprint connection regardless of what the IP is.

Yes, you can use a dynamic DNS system if your IP changes. It is easier if the IP address is static, but dynamic IP is manageable with dynamic DNS.

The IPConfig data doesn't really help, other than indicating that you are using Vista and a number of different VPN connections.

I suggest you choose one IP4 VPN system and concentrate on that. Find the ports that that system uses and forward those ports from your router. They will be the same ports you will need to check your firewall allows through too.

However, before you do that check the documentation for your router. Not all routers will allow VPN traffic through correctly. You need a router that provides VPN pass-through.

    VPN in XP

My OS is XP Pro Sp2

I added ports 47 and 1723 which gave rise to additional Taredo connections. I've deleted the port additions but the Taredos remain.

How does one "Find the ports that that system uses "?

I can't use my standard router at the moment because my USB mobile EV_DO modem does not connect to or go through such router.

Thanks. I believe that is similar to Himachi and Wippien, which are good between 2 personal computers but don't support dialing vpn which I'm trying to use to connect to my bank on the internet.:(
