When booting up my wife's PC, a splash window always opens :

MSTask.exe - Application Error. The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000142). Click OK to terminate the application. "

Clicking on OK makes the window disappear and the PC appears to operate as normal, using Windows 2000.

How can I stop the error message reappearing?

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi beejay

Welcome to the best the WindowsBBS!

This could be a system configuration issue but just to be sure do the below before we delve further.

    To look at you system:
    D/L RSIT http://images.malwareremoval.com/random/RSIT.exe
Run it post both logs here.

    D/L Xclean_Micro http://www.xblock.com/download/xclean_micro.exe
No install, run it delete all it finds decline to reboot on each item found, until the program finishes then reboot.

Xclean will run minimized and will pop up a window if it finds anything. If it finds nothing it will exit.

Please make a note of what it found if any as this might indicate a deeper Malware diag.

    ==========================================
Get the below install and update run FULL SCAN then post log

    http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

If it found much the reboot to Safe Mode and run it again then paste s new log for this run when back to normal mode!

    Your Ball!:)

If no infection is found and that is the legit MSTask.exe you can go into Services and set Task Scheduler to Manual in the Startup box. Reboot after making the change and see if the error goes away.

Sorry, but I never received any email to prompt me to look for any reply till now. I have now set Task Scheduler to "Disable ", since I do not use the thing. After reboot, no error message appears. Thanks for your input.

Now listen carefully - I shall post this only once (now that the BBS Forum has hopefully got rid of its stutter) - any chance of a reply to my previous posting regarding another error message?

See post : "Windows Image Activation Issue "
