I have recently installed Windows Update Notification, but when it runs it gives me this error:
"WUN has detected that you are using IE 5 compatibility mode... You need to launch IE 5 to ..blablabla... "

I have IE 6 installed but never set any IE5 compatibility mode to my knowledge. How can I fix this so that it runs TRUE IE6 without this IE5 mode (I haven't found anything in the options)?

    Thx,

I see that you have another thread going in the Windows 98 forum,
    http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=8714
Computer hangs when using I.E. or Explorer menus: msgsrv32 not responding so it might be to your advantage to post this additional information there.

Here is what I could find on "Internet Explorer 5 Compatibility Mode ". Hope it helps.

I didn't use the previous thread because I didn't feel it was about the same topic (the other was about windows hanging, not specifically about of IE).

I've visited the links above but they are primarily about compatibility mode when using IE5. I have searched the Microsoft support site knowledgebase but can't find anything regarding IE6 and compatibility mode (how to remove/disable it). I checked the install program, but I don't see any references to IE5 compatibility within IE6 (no checkboxes, etc.)

It looks like you had IE4 originally, then upgraded to IE5 with the compatibility mode option, and now you've installed IE6.

The first link I gave you mentioned accessing Windows Update by opening Internet Explorer from the desktop or Start Programs menu. In my version, you click on Tools, then Windows Update, or go directly to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com

I don't have "Windows Update Notification" myself (Windows Update has very little to offer Win95 users!) so I don't know what the deal is there.

Once you access the Windows Update site, click on Product Updates, then on "show installed updates" and see if the IE4/IE5 compatibility mode option is listed. For details see Q171229 How to Add and Remove Internet Explorer Components
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q171229

MSKB Q216697 (last link I gave you in my first post) includes the following instructions, which you can try adapting for IE6 as a last resort.

    ===========copy/paste=========
    Resolution
To work around this problem, uninstall Internet Explorer 5 to return to the previous version of Internet Explorer, and then install Internet Explorer 5 again.

<snip> Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

To manually remove Internet Explorer 4.0 Compatibility Mode, follow these steps:
    1. Delete the "Internet Explorer-4 Compatible" folder and its contents.
    2. Use Registry Editor to delete the following registry key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Compatibility Mode

    3. Delete the "Previous Internet Explorer Ver. 4" shortcut icon from the Internet Explorer folder on the Start menu.
    4. Run the Internet Explorer 5.0 Repair Tool in Add/Remove Programs.

Based on your suggestions I'll just use the TOOLS;WINDOWS UPDATE option occasionally (I'll uninstall windows update notification). I'm leary of using the IE5 uninstall procedure since I'm at IE6 now AND it's working successfully. Not worth taking a chance breaking it again. Thanks for your help.

You're welcome. Glad I could help a bit.

I think you made the right choice.
