I recently got a message on re-booting that my registry size limit was exceeded and the system could not continue to load applications. I uninstalled some old programs and have not received the message again. When I looked in the MS Knowledge Base, I found an entry that stated ...
. Are there any actions I can take to preclude this problem in the future?

Thanks Pete C.

Mailman, I am running Windows XP Pro SP3. I installed SP3 in the last couple of days and don't remember if the present problem surfaced before or right after the installation. Looked at the Restore Point calendar but didn't see a checkpoint for the installation.

Thanks, Guys. :)

Chuck, since the registry size limitation apparently was removed prior to SP3, your issue seems strange, regardless of whether it was before or immediately after installation of SP3. I don't recall ever seeing the message myself anyway.

I suppose lack of free disk space might cause the event you described (or perhaps even Page File size and/or available RAM). Though I doubt you're lacking free drive space.

Perhaps you can open Event Viewer, scroll down to the event (if it exists), and copy/paste the details of the event. That might give us something to Google with and narrow down the search results.

Instructions About How to Access and Use "Event Viewer ":

• Click Start.
• Right-click My Computer.
• Select "Manage" to open the "Computer Management" window.
(Event Viewer will be displayed under the "System Tools" directory item.)
• Expand "Event Viewer" and then select "Application ", "Security ", and "System" to view the logs.
• Look for "error" events that occurred around the time your problem occurred. These events will be displayed as icons with either a white X on red background or a black exclamation point on yellow background. In the security section of Event Viewer, events of possible concern are ones that display a padlock icon instead of a key icon.
• Double-click on an individual event to open the "Event Properties" window which shows details about the event.
• You can use the up/down arrow buttons in the "Event Properties" window to move your focus to other events in the list.
• Use the button below the up/down arrows to copy the details for an event to your clipboard for pasting elsewhere.
• Click on the "http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp" link in the "Event Properties" window to view more information from Microsoft about the event.

Alternatively, Event Viewer may be accessed as follows.
• Click Start > Run...
• Type eventvwr.msc in the "Open:" field.
• Click the OK button.

EDIT: I suspect the event you're looking for would be listed in the "System" section of Event Viewer. You might also find a "Windows Update Agent" information event (or similar event, depending on how you installed SP3) in the same section. That might help you determine whether your "registry size limit" event occurred before or immediately after the SP3 install.

EDIT#2: Other events (error events and/or information events) that occurred immediately before your "registry size limit" event might also provide clues to work with.

Registry size ... again

Hi Mailman,

I posted a query on 23 June 2008 wrt Registry size limit. The last posting to that query was by you on 25 June 2008. The error message eventually went away and I gave it no more thought. Recently, however, I had to uninstall and re-install SP3 in trying to resolve an error in a recently installed application. The error message has returned. I looked in the event log and found nothing related. Do you have another recommendation ... or should I just live with it?

Thanks, Phil, but I have decided for several reasons to just re-install the whole system from scratch. Wish me luck.
