Hello, I am new here so I apologize if this is posted in the wrong place.

I was wondering if anyone knows how I can get a link that is in Outlook Express to open in a new tab instead of a new window when IE is already opened. It used to do this but for some reason no longer does it.

Clicking on the link with the mouse wheel does not work nor does right clicking.

    I am using XP, OutLook Express 6, & IE7

    I appreciate it very much.

    Thanks.

sonorman - Welcome to the Board :)

I cannot find a definitive answer to the question of opening OE links in a new tab as opposed to a new window.

My experience on this is that the response is variable - a link in a newsletter such as WXPNews always opens for me in a new tab, but the link in the notification email to a thread that I have contributed to on the BBS always opens in the same window and on the same tab as the BBS is already open on.

    Thank you

    Thank you, Pete.

Last night when I was using the computer, there seem to be no rhyme or reason. One link opened up in a new tab in the IE window I already had open. The rest of them opened up in a new window. I still could not figure out why the one opened up in a tab.

    Thanks again.

    Real name: Tim :)

    Hi again Pete,

I just wanted to let you know, if you're interested, that I discovered this morning if I double click (left mouse button or mouse wheel) any link in Outlook Express, it will open in IE in the very first tab I already have opened. Today I had three tabs opened when I discovered this.

If IE is opened with only one tab, the mouse wheel doesn't work at all. Also, if IE is opened with only one tab, clicking or double clicking with the mouse button opens another IE window.

Guess I'll just live with this for now. It worked fine with web mail but I am no longer too fond of web mail. That's another story.

Thanks again, very much, for your help.

    Tim
    :)

Yes - now that you mention it I have experienced that :) I have a tendency to double click when only a single click is required. More than once I have been puzzled by the lack of another IE window appearing un the Task Bar and found the URL open in the first of several tabs if present. As I posted above ....
Thanks for the follow up - I wonder what IE8 will bring in that respect :)

Yep, the response is definitely variable. This morning it worked that way. Now...this evening, it absolutely will only open in a totally new window. It's alive....it's alive!!!!! and moody.

This random "which window will open?" game has been driving me crazy, too. If there is a pattern, rhyme or reason as to whether a new tab, new window or what will happen upon clicking an OE link, I haven't found it yet either. There is no discernible logic to this. It's annoying and inconvenient. YMMV

    Hi Johanna :)

Maybe it's a conspiracy to drive us insane. ;)
