I have noticed that often after XP quickly resumes from standby, and I can use all the aps (including opening up bookmarks/history in a browser), that it takes 10-30 seconds to refresh my Gmail account, and occasionally, other sites as well (such as bloglines). I earlier thought that this was just Firefox, but today after trying out Google's Chrome (which you'd think would be less likely to have such quirkiness than any other browser, at least with Gmail) I found this same problem with Chrome--twice--after resuming from standby.

It never happens any other time (except when resuming from standby), but the fact that it happens with other sites leads me to think that it is not just FF's inability to work with Gmail smoothly, but perhaps an XP networking issue.

I seem to be able to load new webpages quickly, and don't notice any "limited or no connectivity" icons in system tray.

    Any suggestions?

EDIT: I am connnected via a USB cable to a cable modem.

I didn't see any reference to wireless in the article.

You might try disabling the power saver feather of your network adaptor by going in to Device Manager.

Hmmm in device manager, the v92 modem and ethernet adapter did have tabs to change the power management settings, but not my cable modem. I only use cable and wireless internet on my laptop.

I'm not sure where to go here--occasionally bloglines (RSS reader) will give me problems, but typically its only gmail. If it were every site, I'd think that this was XP-networking....but since it is primarily focused on Gmail, perhaps there's something with that one site....
