This has happened to me before, but I lucked out and accidentally fixed the problem. Not so this time...

I switched my ISP from AT&T satellite to Grande cable yesterday, and now I can no longer access links from my email (OE6) to the internet. Sometimes if I close all of the windows, I can connect maybe one or two times, then it stops. I'm talking about closing three or four windows maximum. Not a big build-up or anything.

I've already done the tools > options > programs > set IE as default, etc. That doesn't do a thing. So, does anyone have a solution? I registered as a beginner, so that should give y'all some idea of my "expertise." :D

    Thank you.

I think I might try, at a command prompt, with the browser and email closed, entering IPCONFIG /FLUSHDNS. And, if that does not do it, following it up with IPCONFIG /RELEASE and then immediately afterwards, IPCONFIG /RENEW.

AKAJohnDoe -- Thanks for your reply. This is really a dumb question, but here it is: I did manage to find the black "command prompt" screen, and I entered the first thing you suggested. But then what? I hit "enter," but nothing happened. What do I do to make it work?

Don't worry, the command would have done its work if you had entered it correctly.

    Is your problem solved ?

In O/E go to Tools -> Accounts -> Mail tab. Remove any AT&T listing, go to the Add button and enter those POP3/SMTP settings if they are not there already.

Here is the FAQs for email:

The "Webmail" that they talk about is browser based (like Hotmail).

rsinfo -- I should try that again. I must have typed something incorrectly. There is no need to use the "enter" key?

mattman -- I use fastmail, so that's what's in the mail server window. I didn't see anything else there that I knew anything about. (Import, export, etc.) But your idea made sense; I just don't use Grande's mail.

OK, so I'll try the command prompt again. Does the command have to be all caps? Maybe that was my mistake...

    Thank you, everyone. :)

Upper/lower case - it does not matter.

However, IPCONFIG may not do anything if you are not connected to a network.

A network, meaning an email group such as Yahoo?

    Nope.

A network loosely means a group of interconnected computers. [Even internet is a network - albeit a very large one. :D]

Yahoo mail is an email provider.

rsinfo -- Well, thank you for not busting a gut laughing at my question! When I read your answer, I couldn't believe I'd asked the question. It must take quite a bit of patience to deal with us beginners...

So, if I belonged to a network, then ipconfig would work, right? How do I find a network to belong to?

Sort of a recursive answer, but ... IPCONFIG.

IPCONFIG /ALL (or ipconfig /all) will show you the status of all your network adapters.

To connect to a network you configure a connection. This is under Control Panel options. Your ISP is usually the network you would configure a connection to.

So, I did ipconfig/all and got: "Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection....connection specific DNS suffix grandenetworks.net." So, I belong to the Grande network, right?

I've discovered something new about this problem. As I mentioned before, I have to close all of my windows after I've opened three or four to get the link to click.

While in the process of doing this, I noticed that the link is actually opening, but it is *behind* the email page which bears in which it appears. I have to close a window to open the link.
