Comm port not started error code 10

Hi Everyone.
I did a search but could not find any relevant info for this problem.
I am using a fairly old Compaq Armada E500 the os being Xp professional service pack 3.
I intended to use this laptop with my electrical test gear and upload the test results to it via the serial port.
Having checked my device list I find the port as this error "This device cannot start. (Code 10) "
I realise this maybe an hardware problem but hoped to update the drivers for this laptop however I was advised that. I may need the chipset drivers and to be honest i do not know what these are or even what the file names would be or are we talking about the bios?
Any help would be appreciated.

Hi and welcome to the BBS,

All the drivers should be available at the Compaq website:
www.hp.com/support
E500 is probably the Series number, the actual model may be something like a E510 or E520. There is information about finding the model number when you start looking for the drivers/downloads. The chipset drivers will be with the downloads.

There might only be a problem in the BIOS if it was actually disabled there.

well the comm port is working now I checked the bios settings and it has security settings for the port which I disabled and all is now O.K.
