I have a problem with my network connection. On a several occasions my network will connect but have limited or no connectivity. I happens about once or twice a week. One day the network will be fine and the next it has limited or no connectivity. When I try to repair the connection I get a message the states that the connection cannot be repaired because the network has not assigned and I.P. address. Does anyone have any ideas?
I am using Windows XP Service Pack 3.

You must be connected to a router that is acting as DHCP server to give your computer necessary info. Please give details. Is it a home or a corporate network ?

Click on the network icon, view status, click on support, view details, take note of the IP address assigned and confirm that it correspondes to the one your network administrator assigned to your system

The router is on a home network. The other computers seldom get the same limited or no connectivity error. Could this be a problem with the router, ISP, or computer?

If other computers are not getting this error frequently we can for the time being rule out problem with your ISP or router.

The problem may be in the computer or LAN wiring. Is it possible for you to switch this computer with other computer which doesn't has this problem ?

Also update your antivirus & antispyware. Do a thorough check.

    Hi Dynamix7x7
Just need a bit more info to try and help :)
Is it a wired or wireless network?
Have you tried it 'wired' if its wireless?
Have you checked to see if the router's DCHP server is enabled?

goto cmd prompt and type ipconfig /all

this will show you all your IP Settings for your network and to see if DCHP is enabled
check what ip address is showing for your computer with the limited connection

if you see a 169.254.x.x address that means that the router cannot assign a useable ip address to your computer..

    type ipconfig /renew

if you recieve an error message

An error occurred when renewing interface Local Area Connection: Unable to contact your DHCP server. Request has timed out

Try reseting your router! this usually works
let me know how you get on

One vital question to ask - is this a wired or wireless network connection?

Then it is very likely to be a hardware fault. I'd start by swapping cables, then trying different ports on your router/switch. Lastly - check your network card. Some cards come with diagnostics. If you are using a plug-in card rather that one built into your mother board, it would be worth swapping it out if cable and port are OK.

if its an ethernet cable connection

    1) in the device manager check that the network card is marked - installed properly with no red x or question marks
you might want to update the driver

    2) if its a built in ( integrated) network card try installing a pci or usb network card

    3) check the ethernet cable
replace it with a new one to rule this out

    4) In networking check the name of the network connection assigned to your connection
windows xp and 200 has an odd habit of adding numbers to your internet connection. I do now about how the hated vista handles this with its new network stack
if the connection has a number after it - try deleting the others and renaming the network connection as the first primary one

If your connection is wireless then that is another kettle of fish

    - the first question is one of interference
your neighbors wireless signal can drift in out of the blue , sporadically.
This can be inconsistent if the connection is dsl and comes on with activity'
simply change the channel from the default channel 6
any of the other 12 channels will do
channel 1 and 11 are first picks
    - change ssid from defaults even if to add a single digit
    - turn on encryption
    - make sure router is high and not obstructed or cluttered

Changing the channel in wireless wi fi set ups fixes 99 % of most wireless internet problems
