Having a problem getting an item out of the Add or Remove Programs.

Trying to install a new version of Ad-aware 2008. When attempting to run it come up with a window that says "Ad-aware 7.0.2.7 is already installed. You must uninstall the existing version before installing AAW Ver 7.1.0.7 Do you want to uninstall the existing version?" click on "yes" and get the following A Windows Installer box that tells me "the feature you are trying to use is on a network resouorce that is unavailable." It asks for a folder or alternate path to 'WISDED53B0BB67C4244AE6AD6FD3C28D1EF_7_0'. Searched for that on the PC with no luck. I deleted all files relating to Ad-Aware after a recent virus (obviously not the right was) and am now stuck with the Ad-Aware 2007 item in the Add or Remove Programs.

Any ideas on how to remove it?

Hi jrtchunter, Lavasoft forum has this posting relating to your uninstall 2007 problem:please try the following:
    1. go to the start menu, click 'Run...' and type 'services.msc'
    2. in the services window, locate 'Ad-Aware 2007 Service', select it and click 'Stop'
    3. when the service is stopped, try to uninstall again

If you still receive the 1720 error, and are running Windows 2000 or XP, please go to the Windows Script page, download and (re)install the Windows Script. Then try uninstalling again.

If it still won't uninstall try downloading the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility from here and run that. This fixed one users problem - worth a try. Neil.

Just to expand a little bit on some very good guidance from retiredlearner, I believe that service will be titled aaws. Once you have that shut down, and followed his other instruction, if you still encounter problems removing this, you can download and install RegSeeker. Then, using RegSeeker, do a search for lavasoft and remove all entries found. Repeat this search using the word AdAware and remove all entries found. Then using Windows Explorer, search out all files and folders containing the words AdAware or LavaSoft and right click and delete them (only after using RegSeeker as described above). Then reboot. You should now be cleaned up and can go ahead and install the newer version.

    ;)

With Ad-Aware 2008 installed the service is Lavasoft Ad-Aware Service - may have changed since 2007.

jrtchunter - scour the Services list for all possibilities :)

Thanks for the advice, however, 1 problem, AdAware doesn't appear under any entry in the services.msc list.

Excuse my ignorance, bur how do I find the Windows Script page? And while you're there the Windows Installer Ceanup Utility?

Have finally found the solution to this problem. It seems the WISDED.... file is a reference to the MSI file that installed the original version of Ad-Aware, in this case Ad-Aware 2007.
By re-installing the 2007 version corrects the error that was stopping the download of 2008 version.
Having successfully re-installed 2007 I was then able to install 2008 version.
Hope this helps anyone with the same trouble.
