    Pete,

I had noticed in another post that you are a long time user of the Photoshop programs. I have a nagging problem that I can't find a solution to. I currently have Photoshop Elements 5.0. This problem also occurred in Photoshop 5.5 (still installed). On to the problem. Whenever I transfer a picture into the program, it will appear with a red tint and darker then the original. I can make the changes that I want and save it without a problem. If I open the picture in another program, it will be the original tinting and brightness with all the changes. As long as the picture is outside the program, it is fine. When it's in the program, the tinting and brightness changes. As you can imagine, it's a guessing game, sometimes, if I'm making the right changes.

Things were fine in 5.5 for awhile and then it changed for some reason. I don't think I made any software/hardware changes right before it happened, but I can't be positive. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling with no luck. I tried the Photoshop forums with no luck. They suggested going through Adobe Gamma, but it didn't change anything.

Not a huge problem, but something I would like to find the answer to. I would like to take the guess work out of things. I would think it was a program setting since it just happens in Photoshop, but I can't find any setting change that helps. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

    Mike

Apologies for the delay in responding - I bookmarked the thread and then forgot about it :(

I've never used Elements, but the same underlying principles of colour management of Photoshop CS3 will apply.

I would check out your Colour Spaces - your camera probably uses the sRGB colour space - a number of the high end cameras have the facility to select the colour space - I use Adobe 1998. Check that Elements is using the same colour space as the camera - in PS it is Edit > Colour settings.

    Hi Pete,

And you were worried about you being slow to respond!:D My son had me busy selling his CD collection on eBay. 200+ in this batch.

As you suggested, I checked my camera to see if there was a Color Spaces setting. No setting on my camera, so I check Elements. I found the following settings:

    No Color Management
Always Optimize Colors for Computer Screens (this was checked)
    Always Optimize for Printing
    Allow Me to Choose

I changed the setting to the Printing option and nothing changed. I then choose No Color Management and that was the ticket. Thanks for steering me in the right direction! Now the pictures look like the originals when I open them in PSE. I appreciate your help!

    Hi Mike

I had a feeling that it was simply a matter of Colour Space and delighted to learn that that was in fact the solution :) I have no idea what the default colour space is in Elements - I would guess at sRGB, but it looks like your camera has a different colour space.

The default appears to be sRGB. It can also use AdobeRGB. I looked through my book on the camera and can find nothing about the color setting. Not a big deal, but I was curious. Oh well, as long as it works.

    Another Thanks For That.......

I had this problem after running an action in CS3 Extended, it changed the settings to CMYK. To change in this program was View/Proof Setup/and select either Windows RGB or Monitor RGB.

When I came across the red tint the other day I thought it was just my eyes:D

    Thanks

    Nev
