Hi. I have an hp pavilion zv6000 and won' boot up beyond hp logo. I tried setting the bios to default settings which they already were and nothing happens. I can't boot in to safe mode because I do not have that option. The only thing I get is press ESC to change boot sequence, press F10 to enter bios and press F12 to do a network boot.

It uses an ATI graphics card, dedicated memory. I don't know if this could be the problem so I'm trying to figure something out. Is there a way I can load the windows xp disc in and repair windows files?

    Thanks for your help.

Mondo - Welcome to the Board :)
Meaning exactly what? Have you tried the standard F8 method? ....
Do you have a retail XP CD? - I would imagine that your HP came preinstalled with XP and a Recovery disk at best or a Recovery Partition. Both will format the rive and restore it to the as delivered state - your data and any programs you have installed will be lost.

There's no F8 option to boot into safe mode with. I just tried what you said booting into the bios pressing f8 until something pops up but nothing happens, just beeps for repeatedly tapping it. Also I do have a retail XP disc but this is a cousin's laptop and I'm sure he didn't want to lose anything but I'll ask cos well **** happens

The inability to get into Safe Mode is extremely puzzling - I checked out my HP nx6310 laptop and F8 works just fine - takes you to the white on black text screen with several options, one of which is Safe Mode. I wonder if you are pressing the F8 key too early.

I would not be confident that Safe Mode would work anyway if there is a major problem with the computer.

Providing your XP CD is the same OS as the one on the laptop - i.e. XP Home or Pro and preferably the same Service Pack you should be able to make a repair install on the lapop with it.

    Laptop Manual is here ....

Try using "Default Settings" p. 13-5 and "hard drive self test" p. 13-6
