At startup getting the following message....

"We apologize for the inconvenice, but Windows did not load sucessfully. A recent software or hardware change might have caused this.

If your computer stopped responding, restarted unexpectedly, or was automatically shut down to protect your files and folders, choose Last known Good Configuration to revert to the most recent settings that worked.

If a previous startup attempt was interrupted due to a power failure or because the power or reset button was reset or if you aren't sure what happened choose start Windows normally.

    Safe Mode
    Safe mode with Networking
    Safe Mode with Command Prompt
    Last Known Good Config
    Start Windows Normally "

I've tried all methods above and it shuts off after each option then I'm back on this page again.
The only change I have made was Microsoft word download notification with a newer version download this afternoon. Any help will be greatly appreciated and....without erasing the drive. (Windows xp, Live onecare antivirus.

Hello bbterry97, welcome to Windowsbbs! Since you have tried all of those boot options and you can't get into windows then it looks like you may have to do a repair install of windows. Do you have a Windows XP CD? If you do then see if you can boot from the CD to do the repair.

Follow the instructions from this link http://www.windowsreinstall.com/winxphome/installxpcdrepair/part1.htm. Good Luck!

    Somewhat Different Screens

The screens are a bit different for Win XP Pro (SP3) than shown for WinXP Home in the above link. The second screen that pops up during the XP CD boot sequence has the non-destructive repair option which should be selected. After that selection, then just follow the screen instructions for a normal installation.
