As Pete explained, the heatsink is what sits on top of the processor (Intel or AMD, not Presario which is the model of your computer) and is usually covered by a CPU fan. It's sort of this metal cube that functions to absorb the heat given off by the processor. The thermal paste pretty much a glue that connects the CPU to the Heatsink and helps to ensure that heat given off is evenly distributed and effectively transferred between the two parts.

If you ever decide to get a new computer, I would highly recommend using your Presario to learn reapplying thermal paste and reseating heatsinks or other hardware operations. I'm no hardware expert by any means, but I had to do a few of these things when I built my own machine and I learned a lot.

I really do not know how to stop you fretting over a CPU temp of 41 deg C - you are becoming paranoid about this .....

Download CPUID Hardware Monitor set it running and leave it for a day, run the computer hard for a while in between and then post the max/min CPU temps this evening. See screen shot of CPUID window - the data is from my computer.

Thanks Mike! I think its fixed, when the screen went black i left it untill it started and is said it had recovered from a stop error, i reported it and it took me here...

    http://wer.microsoft.com/responses/...SGD=a7d48e9e-0ef8-4333-b3ec-b317cab9410a#here

and told me to do this

"This procedure prevents the display device driver from programming the hardware incorrectly, but you might lose some display functionality and performance.

Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Display.
Click the Settings tab, and then click Advanced.
Click the Troubleshoot tab, move the Hardware Acceleration slider to None, and then clear the Enable Write Combing check box.
Click OK, and then click OK."

I turned it up as i couldn't play the new runescape HD. I guess its fixed:D
