    Hello guys and gals,

I was wondering if it's possible to look at a Windows Product Key and determine if it's XP Home, XP Pro, SP1, Corporate, etc.

    Thanks,

    Hmmm, for what reason?
The product key is asocoated with the installation CD/DVD or computer that was purchased.

    Thanks for the reply.

The pc in question was on a corporate network in my office. The only CD I have is an image CD with all the default 'work' programs. The pc has a legit Win XP Pro key on the side of the case. However when I try and install a Win XP Pro CD from my other pc it says that the key is invalid.

That is why I am asking. There is no funny business going on here.

    Take care,

Sometimes a valid key returns as invalid because the key is already in use with another installation. It's how Microsoft prevents one key being used multiple times. One time I uninstalled XP Pro from one computer I owned and tried to install it on another machine, but I could not activate it. When I activated by phone I had to explain to the support rep that I had uninstalled the previous copy and was trying to reinstall on a different machine. For me it's usually a process that is taken care of by itself, but this time Microsoft had to manually deactivate the previous installation.

    HTH,

    Mike

    Thanks Mike,

The product key won't work during the initial install of Windows XP.

A key which was originally for an OEM version will not work (i.e. you get the message the key is invalid) on a retail version.
