Hey guys, I'm new here and I am also having problems with my system restore. I couldn't find anything about what I'm experiencing so I hope that I am not violating any rules. Within the last four days, my computer has started locking up and I decided today that I was going to restore my computer to an earlier time and it keeps coming up blank. I searched for the .dll files in the system recovery and they are not found. What do I do in this situation? I do not have the original disk so I can't reinstall anything. Any suggestions that you have for me would be greatly appreciated.

    jman198028 - Welcome to the Board :)

Please do not hijack an existing thread - start your own even if your problem appears to be the same otherwise your post will not get the attention it deserves. The thread you tacked onto is effectively dead as you might have realised - the thread starter took the hump and disappeared :)

I have split your post to a new thread.

We need a little more background detail to your problem ....
Do you mean that the System Restore calendar which lists the available Restore points is blank? If that is the case there is a possible solution posted here ......

    Blank System Restore Calendar

If your computer has started to lock up it may be a software problem, but System Restore only monitors system files and is not a guaranteed solution. Have you installed any new hardware/software recently, updated anything around the time you started to experience the freezing?

Is this a laptop or desktop? Many computers these days come with a Recovery Partition on the drive which enables the computer to be restored to the 'as delivered' state. Note that this means that all your data and any programs which you installed will be wiped out if you use the Recovery facility. - there are exceptions, but this is the general situation.

white screen when I try to enter system restore

My computer has dramatically decreased the rate at which it opens files and folders. When I run my virus scans and spyware scanners, it says my computer is fine. I went through my add/remove programs and removed the things I didn't need. Could any of this be part of my issue? The computer was already running funny when I removed these things. One of the programs I removed was windows explorer. I've never used it so I decided to remove it from my computer. Is this something I should re-install?

When I try to do a system restore, it gives me a completely white screen. I have no calender or anything to click on. I have no idea if I am missing files that are needed for this to operate correctly or if there is a more serious issue. I am open to any suggestions that any of you may have for me.

I have a desktop which I got from work. I have the Windows XP operating system. I am thinking about re-installing this but I don't want to do that if I can easily fix the problem. I don't know if I have a recovery file on my system or if I need to have a disk.

Any suggestions or help you guys have to offer will be appreciated.

Are you sure? - not possible as it is an integral part of Windows.

In addition to following Mike's post you might try reinstalling System Restore, but be aware that this is unlikely to magically come up with any restore points as I doubt you have any ....

I found my Windows XP disc so I'm going to see if it will repair it and fix the issue. I am going to remove the AVG. I have Windows LiveOne Care and have used the scanner at www.pandasecurity.com. I will let you know if I am able to resolve this issue.

Also, I made a typo, I meant to say internet explorer, not windows explorer so please accept my apologies for this matter. What is an HJT log and how do I go about getting it so I can post it? I am not familiar with this.

Glad to hear you resolved the problem, albeit by brute force :D

    A few BTW's ....
You cannot uninstall that either - if you use another browser you can set that to be the default. IE 7 you can uninstall, but in doing so you roll back to IE 6.
Suggests that you were running two antivirus programs - this is not recommended as it will inevitably result in conflicts between the two - that may have been a part cause of your problems - the freezes and slowness. It is OK to have two antivirus programs installed providing that only one is running and the other is disabled.

Thank you Pete, I appreciate your advice. My computer ran great for about an hour and then as I was downloading my drivers, it began to restart after I entered my password to log into windows. I gave up and unplugged if after the tenth time it did this. I have a computer tech at school that I am going to take it too. Once I have it fixed, I will post what the problem was.
