Okay, from an XP computer I am going --

    My Network Places

    View Workgroup Computers.

Then when I click on the icon for the Vista based computer a login screen pops up and asks me for a username and password.

Is there a default in Vista that I have overlooked?

I think that if I can log on and let the computers "see" one another it will clear up my printing problems.

    Thanks in advance,
    Rick

    Tony,

I don't think you've linked to the right document. There isn't a passwords section. In fact the main comment about passwords is this:

"4. Click the arrow button next to Password protected sharing, click Turn off password protected sharing, and then click apply.

If you have password-protected sharing turned on, people will need a user account with a password on your computer to access your printer. "

Which makes me nervous. Passwords are good. Network systems where you are advised to turn them off is bad. However, that seems to be the way Microsoft are going with peer-to-peer networking.

Therefore, have a look at BurrWalnut's post in this thread:

    http://www.windowsbbs.com/networking/75970-networking-xp-desktop-vista-laptop.html#post411195

It seems to be reasonable advice as to how to set up XP and Vista to work together without passwords.

I agree, password protected sharing is best way to do it. That's what I do for all my clients' offices and business emvironments, but I don't setup password sharing on my clients' home networks because they:
    1. don't remember passwords
    2. don't perform regular system maintenence
    3. want to keep things as simple as possible
    4. I don't want the calls to reset the stored passwords after they somehow mess things up.
