    Hi,

I have Windows Xp Pro working fine and also use LogonUI to change the Boot Screen and the Logon Screen. I download the SP1 and when tryiing to install it says that the kernel is not the original Microsoft and aborts the install. Fair enough, LogonUI replaces the NTOSKRNL during the boot screen setup.

I then disabled the LogonUI and manually copied the original NTOSKRNL.EXE back. Windows starts OK with the original boot screen but the SP1 still does not like it and aborts. Is there any other change to be done besides replacing the original NTOSKRNL?

    Cheers!

It sounds like SP1 is pretty fussy. You could either do a system file check to replace all changed system files (Run--> sfc /scannow) or do a repair installation (boot from CD, follow all the prompts, do not select "R" at the Recovery Console, but do select "R" on the last screen where setup looks for previous versions of Windows).
Get your system back to default and it should work OK.

    Thanks Abraxas!

    Here is what happenned...

Firstly, I Ghosted my XP, just to play in the safe side. Then, I disabled the LogonUI, restored the old NTOSKRNL, rebooted fine and did what you suggested above and ran the Scannow. It asked for the CD, restored what was missing or changed and everything went fine. Rebooted the machine and started to install the SP1.

Again, everything went fine and finished rebooting the PC. Then the hell broke loose and I had a beautiful BSD saying that there was a fatal error and the system had shutdown. No use to boot in safe mode, last configuration or any other mode for that matter. The system was DEAD! After cursing Mr. Gates for a while, decided to restore my image and am back on-line without the SP1.

Let's wait for the next couple of weeks and see what is the feedback from other users.

    Thanks again,

Here's a link to a bunch of SP1 installation issues. Might be worth a read to see if it helps your problem.

Link removed because some information at that site is banned at this BBS.

Gee, apeferreira, sorry to hear about that.
I have done many sfc's and only once had a problem. No blue screen, but a lockup at the boot screen, so no Safe Mode, either. I also had replaced ntoskrnl.exe, so I wonder if that is the common point.
In any case, a repair installation got me up and running again, with everything intact.

I'm definitely going to wait a week or so and see how others make out with SP1. And now, probably image my drive!

Release Notes with known issues can be found at the Microsoft Web site.

Anyway, that's the reason why I would never use any software that replaces core OS files!

:D I agree Arie but... isn't so nice to start Windows without the boring Microsoft logo and login having your screen decorated with the landscape you like instead of the even more boring MS logon sky blue screen?

Also, I think there is only one good way to learn is playing with your system, installing junk, etc. I do that all the time but always have a working Ghost image waiting to be restored if something goes wrong.

My XP is back alive and with SP1 working fine but without my pretty screens... Pity! Until someone finds a way to put them back...

    Cheers!

    OK made it.
Called HP today, nice female tech advised me use HP PC System Recovery not editing the registry as planed. Ran System Recovery
WOW everything turned out great. Had to defrag SP1 seems to mess it up. Also the system does not seem to be running as fast as pre installation ofSP1. I want to thank every one for all the help and consideration to guide this 74 year young fumbler get thru this. Thanks : :)

Glad you are all set. I was actually hoping for a registry fix because I know someone else with the same problem.
Well, at least we know about HP's now.

Others have mentioned the need for defragging after installing SP1, but most seem to think their system actually runs faster, though it does seem to me, subjectively, that nearly every security fix slows things down slightly.

    Hi again,

Still related to the first problem in this thread, I am glad to advise to all those LogonUI (Boot screen and Logon screen changer) lovers, that UserXP, the site creator of the program has released a new version for SP1. It works fine, so far...

    Cheers!:D :D

Norton worked fine before SP1 download, Would not function
after down load, removed Norton, tried to reinstalled, after 3/4 of installation, notice "Live update will not be available for this product" and deleted part of installation.
