This has to do with both my laptop and my cell phone (same battery type).

isnt the worst thing you can do for a battery is have it being used and charging at the same time??

My new phone came with a USB port to upload pics, songs (ringtones), etc onto my phone, which is AWESOME! But, to keep the battery holding a charge for a good long time, when is the best time to do this, battery wise? I ask because, when i plug in the USB, it also charges, much like an ipod.

should i wait till its empty? full? doenst matter?

I would not think so - common practice to use a laptop on AC power - the battery continues to charge until full then runs off the AC. If you have the power icon in the Notification Area and mouse over when on AC you see either xx% Charging or On AC Power.

FWI I have just sold my old laptop - 5 years old with the original battery still going strong and used for the most part on AC power.

Think of an automobile - battery is used and charged at the same time.

Li-Ion batteries are completely different from Nickel Cadmium rechargeables which would develop a low capacity memory if charged repeatedly before they were discharged.
Doesn't matter - would be a pain and hardly user friendly if you could only operate when the battery was empty or full :)

One of the keys to longer laptop battery life is to actually USE the battery. When at home, I run on AC power, but if I will disconnect it & run off the battery at least once/week if I have not been mobile.
