Would this work? Using a network splitter, I want to split the connection from my cable modem sending a direct connection to my desktop computer (which is NOT wireless) and a Linksys Wireless Router which I use with my laptop.

REASON: Lately the Linksys Router has been dropping connections randomly...when it does this the power temporarily goes off, then the router reboots itself. Since my desktop computer gets it's Internet connection from the Linksys Router, my desktop system becomes inoperable until the router get back up and running. With the mentioned setup, at least when the router goes down, I will still have a direct, unaffected connection to my desktop computer.

    Here's a thought. Get a new router.

Get a new router. AFAIK, Linksys routers don't have an "auto-reboot" feature built into it. If it powers off and then powers on all by itself then the router is faulty. Replace it, it's likely still under warranty so take it back to the store where you bought it.

Other possible solution would be to upgrade the router firmware to the latest version for that model, and if no joy, return it.

how confusing - why make life difficult
If you do want to use the linksys wireless router as a wireless transmitter
turn off the dhcp in it
You will basically turn it into a wireless switch
If you attach router to router you will have two routing tables - lots of troubles and inconsistent service - especially if you go to secure sites
As well if you run a cable from router ( or splitter ?) to the router number 2 - ( linksys) it will go into one of the four lan ports - not the single wan port marked internet
