Click Start>Run and type the following command, then hit Enter.

    sc stop dnscache

Please download HostsFileReader.zip by Option^Explicit, saving it to the desktop.
    • Extract HostsFileReader.zip
    • Double click on HostsFileReader.exe
    • Click on Scan for Hosts
    • If any Hosts files other than the default Hosts file are found (located at C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc\Hosts), select it in the list then click Use Notepad
    • Post the contents of that file(s) here
    • If only the default Hosts file is found, click Reset Default
    • Close the program when complete

If you Reset Default, click Start>Run and type the following command, then hit Enter.

    sc start dnscache

    Test your internet connection now.

You never did say ... when using the IP address to load Google, are you able to navigate to any other pages (do a search and try going to any link)?

It didn't find any. When I used the ip address, I did try to search and I couldn't.
I still have no internet other than using an ip address.

It didn't find any ... as in none at all? Did you click Reset Default anyway? You should have. If using default doesn't help (might need a restart), lets give another Winsock utility a shot. It's frankly the best one I've found, but the download link I had was no longer good and I'd been unable to find it, until tonight. :)

    Download WinsockFixWinAll from Digital Minds International. Scroll down to Utilities where you will find;

Double click WinsockFixWinALL.exe to run it, then click Repair Winsock.
When finished it will open a log after you've clicked OK to the reboot reminder prompt.
Close the log, exit the utility then reboot.

Sadly, no. :( It's looking like I am going to eventually have to reinstall the wireless card.

Well, there's certainly no harm in trying that. In the meantime, I'll continue trying to find something else to try ..... I've exhausted my own knowledge base of what generally fixes this sort of problem.

I'm still looking too. Lets see if anything changed at all. Run the ipconfig /all command again and post the results. Then, nslookup too.

Run the following command from a command window.

    netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt

I need to see the contents of C:\resetlog.txt

Reboot and see if you can connect.

Well, it appears progress has been made.

Please repeat the steps in this post.

I've never heard of it happening, but there's a chance AVG Site Blocking might have a role here. Look through AVG's options and see if you can disable that, and anything else that appears it might affect internet connectivity. Reboot and see what you've got.

I didn't see site blocking anywhere in AVG. Maybe I'm just unfamiliar with it?

I'll see what I can dig up RE: AVG.

    Run the HostsFileReader again.
In the lower window, it should list C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc\Hosts
Click to select it, then click Use Notepad
Under the 127.0.0.1 localhost entry, add the following, making sure to leave 1 space between the numbers and the www.

    64.233.187.99 www.google.com
    207.68.172.246 www.msn.com

Close it and save the changes.
Now click Start>Run and type http://www.google.com and hit Enter.
    Repeat with http://www.msn.com

    Let me know the results.

Google had no problem loading when I did that. MSN however had no such luck.

If you paste the IP 207.68.172.246 into the address bar and hit enter, does the msn homepage load?

I was searching around a bit on AVG and have seen other reports of problems with internet connectivity where it was installed.
Is the installation on that computer the free version?
If purchased, is the license key saved to text somewhere?
Do you have the installation file?

It might be worth a shot to uninstall AVG and see if things work properly again, after a reboot of course.

    If you don't want to try that just yet, give me specifics about the installation;

    Pro or Free
Antivirus only or Internet Security Suite with Firewall
    etc

No, that IP address didn't want to load either when I did that. I uninstalled AVG 8.0. Google now comes up when I open the browser, but nothing else does. But I ran the hosts file reader and this came up:
    C:\I386\HOSTS

AVG 8.0 was the free version. I was thinking about replacing it with something else due to all of the problems I've heard about it.
