Recycle Icon

Win XP Home - The Desktop Recycle Bin Icon has lost it's identification name. No actions takes place with a right click to select Properties. I can select Explore. I'm not "there" enough to figure out why this has happened nor can I figure out how to correct it.

Advice would be appreciated.

 

One you can check, Mudd.
Run--> regedt32
Navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Desktop\NameSpace\{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}
The right pane should read "Name: (Default), Type: REG_SZ, and Data: Recycle Bin.

There are many others. Do you get an infotip when you mouse over the icon?
Used a registry cleaner lately that saved the changes so they can be reversed?
Since the Recycle Bin is so embedded as a system folder, the problem could be anywhere.
Any Recycle Bin apps used, like Norton?

 

I downloaded a program called CLEANUP and have used it. I did this based upon someone on the Forum saying it was a good program to keep the system clean. I used the Basic setting, hoping it would do no hard. That is probably where I erred. The first time I ran it, it cleaned 38.XXMB. Thought that was good.

I don't get anything with the mouse over the Icon. Don't get anything over any of the icons in fact.

I'll wait for a few minutes and then do the things you said in your post.

 

Abraxas, Did the Registry check and what you indicated should be there is.

 

Well, Mudd. I don't know what to say. I'd be a little wary of those cleanup programs for the disk or registry that claim to know what is needed and use a shotgun approach.
If it Was Disk Cleanup by Gregory Braun, then I don't know what to advise.
If it was a cleanup program that also cleans the registry, they usually have a backup option to replace what was removed.

Short of that, I myself would do a repair reinstallation. You don't lose anything by doing that, except possibly Windows updates you have installed.

 

The help files indicate that caches, History, Recent Docs, temp directory, and various registry files are cleaned up. There is not a mention of backup in the help files. It does mention that sometime one can get back files deleted and goes into something I don't understand to do that.

It mentions that a Nick Gould and George Cole assisted in coming up with the program. Couldn't find the author.

It doesn't hurt I suppose that I can't do the things I want to with the recycle bin. I know it was set to Normal rather than the Norton part. I have Sys Works 2002.

I'll kick around a few days and when I'm feeling lucky I will do a Repair as you suggested.

The "undelete" thingy is probably only for files. I think this is a registry problem.

 

Merge this file into your registry.

 

I think this is the page I got the program. www.softwaretrials.com/cookiescache. It was posted on this forum about week or so ago.

I ran the program from Brent. Think I should reboot to see. It didn't change anything so far.

Added information: When I delete something and open the Recycle Icon, the page is empty. I can select empty the Recycle Bin and it will indicate "do you want to delete so and so, or do you want to delete 15 items or something like that" and appears to empty. I don't see what it is emptying as nothing ever appears in the window.

 

Brett - Sir, that took care of the problem. Restarted and all is back to normal. Wish you were close by, I'd have Old Grouch pick you a bucket of peas, shell them, and cook them up for you! Thank you.

Brett--I was trying to think of how to put all those keys in a vb file for Mudd. Though he is a god among men, the task looked too daunting (read: "time-consuming "). I should have known this was a not uncommon problem.

The Recycle Bin icon on the desktop seems to be a problem, off and on, for any number of folks.

For instance, if you remove it from the Desktop with TweakUI (which also removes it from Windows Explorer), the Recycled folder/icon in the C: directory (partition in my system) will eventually lose its properties (not so those on other partitions), and the Recycle Bin cannot be emptied from there.

The only solution I've found is to empty the Recycle Bin from another partition, restore the icon to the Desktop with Tweak, close Explorer, and reopen it. Sometimes logging off and back on speeds up the process.

If your hard drive is unpartitioned, so that you have only a C: directory, it's necessary to restore the icon to the Desktop (which also restores it to Windows Explorer), empty the Recycle Bin, and cycle Explorer and/or the system.
