Hi, I just recently had to format my hard drive and reinstall my OS (windows 2000 pro sp4). I've had to do this before and never had these problems I'm having now on the web. The first one I noticed was that when I went to windows update, I could download, but not install any of the updates, they would all fail to install.

After reinstalling my flash and shockwave plug ins, when I go to two of my favorite sites. "google video" and "myspace karaoke" the flash application that run the videos don't load in, and both sites are giving me javascript errors. "You Tube" is working fine though.

The part that now boggles my mind, is that this morning, I went into my add/remove programs and noticed all the win 2k hotfixes and security downloads were installed. But when I checked out my update history at the windows update site, it showed that these updates were indeed installed, but done by automatic update. The problem is, unless this was done while I was asleep, I never saw the automatic windows update icon appear in my taskbar. And when I clicked to check for updates at windows update, I'm now getting an error that something failed after scanning.

I really would like to know what could be causing this, so any help with this issue would be appreciated. Thanks. :)

    Update

Just letting everyone know that one of my problems seems to have been eliminated. For some reason after installing a program called "sysmetrix" (which is a program I have had before), Google video & Myspace karaoke are no longer giving me javascript errors and are working properly.

But, it didn't solve my problem with windows update. I still can't install any new updates.

Also, a new problem seems to have risen..I wanted to install a copy of system mechanic 8 (which I had installed before my reformatting), and when I try to install it, it does it's serach for updated files, and then the setup shuts off. This has never happened before, so this one has me baffled.

I ran a complete scan of my computer for viruses and spyware/adware/malware using avast! home edition, and it didn't find anything so I guess that eliminates this being a problem steming from that.

I hope someone here can give me some suggestions cause this is driving me crazy.

You have 3 separate problems here, one related to IE which you appear to have resolved.

Please start a new thread in the Windows 2000 forum re. updates and another in the Other Software forum for the program installation problem.

No one will look here unless they have an interest in IE6 :)
