    Hi all,

Having just joined, and having had a quick look at the posts, I can't see anything that quite matches my 'problem' so here goes.. my post for help.

Ok, so, a little background first:

My Grandma and Grandad has an eMachines 620 machine with a 2.70 GHz Intel Celeron Processor. It originally came with 512MB RAM which I have upgraded to 1GB. It was running WinXP Home Ed. SP3 Yesterday, I wiped the HDD and reinstalled, but upgraded to WinXP Pro. I have now installed SP2 - which ran overnight last night, through Microsoft Update. However, since all of the above, Microsoft Update fails on any update I try to run. The first two were IE7 and Microsoft Malicious Removal Tool, which I ran manually, to see if it may kickstart it (a lame hope I know!)

Alas, it hasn't helped, and I can't find anything anywhere else, so - HELP?!

Thanks in advance to all you wonderful people,

    Matt

    I fixed it!

    Hey,

Just in case anyone else has this problem I found a solution. I put a call in to an ex-work collegue, and they had the same problem about 4 days earlier, so she sent me the following solution:

    You know we keep getting that problem where Windows Updates fails everytime? I found this which fixed it for me;

    Problem:

    • You try to update a computer that is running Windows XP.

    • You have performed a new installation of Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2).

    • You have visited Windows Update site directly for updates and immediately performed an update to Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3).

    Solution:

    • Stop the Automatic Updates service.

    • At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER: regsvr32 %windir%\system32\wups2.dll

    • Start the Automatic Updates service.

    • Restart the Computer and Perform Windows Updates again.

It worked a treat for me :)

    Regards,

    Matt

Yes, that'll work for less experienced users, but some of us like to fix things manually :D

Thanks for posting your fix Matt!
