    hi all,

i'm dropping in to say hello and also see if i can find some help.

i have been searching the net and have seen that you have to forward a port for remote desktop to work.

i have a pc in the computer room with a wireless connection to the router in the sitting room, 192.168.1.10 (static ip) and this machine is also connected to the internet via ethernet and it's own modem.

in the sitting room i have a lap top 192.168.1.3 (static ip) and this sits behind the router that in turn has it's own internet connection.

both have static ip address and i can ping each other from each machine but i can't connect to remote desktop on the lap top. i can connect from vista to the pc.

now under port forwarding on the router i have enabled the following port 3389.

so i have the settings like this

    Ports - Custom Services

    Service Name remotedesktop
    Service Type TCP/UDP TCP UDP
    Starting Port (1~65534) 3389
    Ending Port (1~65534) 3389
    Server IP Address . . . 192.168.1.10

Hope some one can help, ironic thing is i had this all working.

Oh and i have got enable desktop remote settings enabled on the vista machine, but i'm getting the good old " can't connect to the remote computer"

    Thanks

You don't need post forwarding on an internal network. Port forwarding is used to forward packets from the WAN side to a specific IP on the LAN side.

There's a whole bunch of troubleshooting info posted in this thread. Work your way through it, and if you still have issues post back to this thread.

If something solves your problem, post back here too ;)

    thread closed i guess......

I searched through windows help on "remote desktop" and this is what I found:

You cannot use Remote Desktop Connection to connect to computers running Windows Vista Starter, Windows Vista Home Basic, Windows Vista Home Basic N, or Windows Vista Home Premium, and you can only create outgoing connections from those editions of Windows Vista.

Yea, you didn't mention which edition of Vista you had. I thought you'd have noticed on the System Properties > Advanced tab that only Remote Assistance is listed, not Remote Desktop.
