    I've been using Outlook Express....

However, it's not available on Vista.

So since I have to change anyway, I'm looking for advice (as well as the pros & cons) on what I should use now.

Having just lost years of emails when my XP computer went down, I'm thinking about Windows Mail Live. However, since I have multiple POP email addresses from each of my multiple web sites, plus a Yahoo! and gmail address, getting them all on one computer in one place made sense... until losing them all.

So, since I've lost everything I'm re-thinking what I should do next.

    Any advice is most appreciated.

Windows Mail in Vista , basically OE with a new name tag AFAIK.
Sorry to hear that, but - as I'm sure you know - backup, backup and backup again :)

FWIW my OE message store, etc are all located on a separate partition from the OS and this data partition is backed up hourly to another internal hard drive which in turn is backed up to an external hard drive weekly.

Belt, braces and a piece of string as we say over here :)

    Hi Pete!

Yes... but "I never thought it would happen to me..."

I'm pretty good at keeping backups of most things, but never once gave any thought to backing up emails. And while 99.44% of them (or more) I probably should have deleted long ago, there were a few I needed to keep.

But life is a learning process, right? :D

Since I would much prefer to download my emails to my computer, what do I need to do to back up my email? And is it a different process between XP and Vista (and 98, and 95 )

I can't speak for Vista as I don't use it, but for XP, probably 98 and earlier if you open OE and go Tools > Options > Maintenance tab - Store folder you can change the location of the Store Folder. I call mine Outlook Express (highly original :)). It can be on the OS drive or whever you want and as such is much easier to locate and backup than drilling down to ......

    C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{C59F40B5-82BD-4533-823D-3649E60C0AEF}\Microsoft\Outlook Express\Inbox.dbx :D

    Alternatively read this .....

    To add to PeteC’s reply:

The normal location of Windows Mail is the hidden folder
C:\Users\{user name}\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Mail\Local Folders then Inbox, Sent Items, etc. Individual mail items have an extension of .eml, which can be double-clicked to open.

To change the Store folder, go to WM > Tools > Options > Advanced Tab > Maintenance > Store folder.
