Son-in-law had virus on his computer Dell dimesion. I could not run anti-virus to fix. Tried safe mode but because he has no PS2 ports and USB devises will not work in safe mode.

Got fustrated, fdisk hard drive with windows 98 boot disk but the process would not work, it kept telling me that "divice driver not found MSDC001. How do I boot up to re-install windows XP?

Suzi - Welcome to the Board :)

Most newer computers have USB support in the BIOS so there should be no problem with a USB keyboard or mouse. With no PS/2 ports this should be a certainty.

The message from the W98 boot disk indicates a missing CD-ROM driver - where did you get this disk from?

However, AFAIK Dell supply a full copy of XP as opposed to a Recovery CD, but you could boot from either to reinstall XP. Check in the BIOS that the boot order is CD-ROM > Floppy (if present) > Hard drive and boot from the install/recovery CD.

For a full XP CD follow the instructions below ....

    Reloading Windows

Have Question? Since I wiped out Operating System (windows XP) when I fdisk, and w98 boot disk (have had for some time) is not recoginizing the cd rom driver, the cd rom will not work nothing boots from it.

I had to purchase a new windows xp because they could not find any of the disks. Will a new disk work?

Boot order is cd rom first, but I connected an external usb floppy drive that that seems to be working. I had no problems here.

I tried to locate the fulll opy of xp in AFAik Dell but did not locate the links

I am somewhat confused here ....

    First ....
    Which process - fdisk or .... ?
So you were successful in fdisking the drive?

Provided that the CD-ROM drive is functional booting from the XP install disk should work fine - the first part of the installation copies a CD-ROM driver to the drive.

Just to be clear - power up the computer and open up the CD-ROM drive - power off the computer and put the XP CD into the drive, close it and reboot.

You cannot download a copy from Dell - AFAIK the disk is an option when purchasing the computer or can be purchased from Dell at a later stage.
