Hi all, I am trying to run the TrendMicro PRO version.
My, declared by the Trend Micro techs. as an "OLD" computer, is a Compaq Presario, 335 Intel Celeron D processor, 256MB PC2700 Memory, 80 GB drive, Desktop.
Before I purchased the PRO I checked the box for the required memory. The box stated that a min of 256MB of RAM was required.
I know, perhaps, I should have read more into that than I did.
After numerous go-arounds with various TrendMicro techs,it is now clear that the PRO needs at least the 256MB of RAM just for itself.
The thing that I noticed is that with each task to collect data from my system ( HIJACK,SICLOG, SYSWIN etc.) the computer was getting slower.
My desktop now has at least 15 different Icons from these tasks holding almost 200 MB.
    My question is:
In the scheme of things-do these (TrendMicro tools) desk top Icons, with their large memory needs, affect the available RAM memory available-

Recall:I have only 256Mb of RAM.

Something is eating into that 256MB such that I have only 68Mb of RAM left.
I read the posting on WINDOWS BBS.Com where it states that earlier TrendMicro versions-2006 etc. will interfere with the proper functioning of the PRO. There is an icon with the 2006 version(63.1MB)
I did mention this desktop resident 2006 version to the Trend techs.
They were not concerned with it.
FYI The 2008 PRO and the Internet Security and all future versions of these will require the same RAM to run. I was offered to uninstall the PRO and install the 2007 version of the Internet Security with a 6 month extension of service.
Other than buying 1GB of RAM what are my options here?
    Can you help please?

The files you note are taking up 200 Mb of your hard drive storage capacity - they are not using any of your system memory.

If you are running XP the absolute minimum RAM (memory) for XP to run is 256 Mb and it will do so very slowly.
It is being used by Windows and other running processes and part of it may be assigned to your graphics chip if that is on the motherboard as opposed to a plug in card.

I would suggest you do yourself a favour and put in a minimum of another 256 Mb RAM, but with the low price of RAM today I would add a Gb and XP will fly :)

Bear in mind that not any memory will do - it must be compatible with your motherboard. To ensure that it is log onto Crucial.com or Kingston and run your computer through their memory selector to get the RAM suitable for your computer.

    Hi,Pete C
Thank you for the quick reply and lesson.
I will check for the right RAM as suggested and install.
Yes, 1 GIG sounds good to me, too.
If it helps with the speed, I am all for it.
    Thanks again.

    From a PM .....

Ordered the 1 GIG from Crucial. Thanks for the help.
In reading the "WARNINGS" I came to the following conclusions:
    1. The Compaq SR1410NX seems to be a very generic item,i.e. as far as the RAM - it may contain a chipset that at 256MB runs OK(reads from only 1 side) and at a voltage that I can not find specified ANYWHERE; BUT--by adding a large 1 GIG RAM-it is obvious that I have to move the 256MB from the 0 position and use that 0 position for the 1GIG. The issue of concern is the 2.5 voltage. Will this additional(1 GIG) DRAIN greatly affect the power supply?
What about the fact that the 1GIG is,most likely, a 2 sided read item, and the 256Mb a 1 sided.
Is there anyway to know which it is before actually installing/running the thing?
    Please:
Is there any program that I can run to see who/what is using all of the 200MB RAM. Trying to learn something here.
Lastly, is there a website that tells me how to get the blasted cover off of this Compaq, and the location of the RAM

Looking at the Crucial (UK) page for your computer I do not see the warning that you mention
No - the current taken is v. small.
Memory modules are made up of several memory chips - the larger the module the greater the number of chips required - hence they are fitted to both sides.
It will be double sided - look at the module when you get it.
Right click on the Task Bar > Task Manager > Processes tab. The memory used by each running process is listed.
The HP Compaq website :) .....

    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/manualCategory?lc=en&cc=us&lang=en&os=228&product=457547&dlc=en&

Detail should be in one of the manuals listed.

Trend PRO RAM memory requirement followup

Hi PETE, well the 2 gigs arrived. Took some time developing the guts to tear into the Compaq. Installed these and a samsung dvd+/- rw and all seemed ok for about 1 wk.
The TREND-PRO now loads within 1 minute(6-7 minutes b4 the ram increase)
    Then got hit with a trojan cutwail.de, Joke_blue screen, win32/adware.virtumonde and win32/privacy remover.m64.
Called the Trendmicro guys. They remotely removed/reloaded a lot of s/ware.
Well, I got the bad things removed, I hope...
BUT, now I get no audio on anything I view on the internet as well as am not able to print(copy) articles/instructions from the internet.
A message stating:" ybrowser.exe entry point not found. The procedure entry point SETUPITERATE Cabinet A could not be located in the dynamic link library SETUPAPI.dll "
shows up each time I click on anything on the screen. By ok-ing it you are able to get to what you want.
The internet is a different story. If I want to print an article I get this message::" ybrowser.exe entry point not found. The procedure entry point SETUPAPI.CM_GET_DEVICE_IDW could not be located in the dynamic link library CFGMGR32.dll.
I did e-mail the TREND guys. I have performed the sfc /scannow 2x- all seems to be OK.
Meaning: no prompts/directions were given by the window scan.
The next thing I am supposed to do is a sysytem restore to a date 2 weeks prior to 8/22/08.(Date the trend guys dialed into the computer)
The bad thing is that I bought this Compaq with XP loaded and do not have a Windows XP disk- if requested.
Given the prior, less than positive, experience with the trend guys- is this the right thing to do?
If not, what should the next logical step be. I've noticed a few dll fixes sites available on your site. How good are these?
    Thanks for your help.

Please stick with the same thread for a follow up :) We only get email notification of a reply to a thread in which we have posted - having been away I only noticed your new thread by chance. There is no way I am going to read through 1000+ new threads! Merged.

I'm glad to hear that the extra RAM is showing a benefit. As for the rest of your post this should have been in a new thread, but .....

Without knowing what the Trend people did it is difficult to advise beyond ....

I would make the System Restore - an XP CD is not required for this operation. This may restore the trojan too, but even if it does not read this and post the requested logs in a new thread in the Malware & Virus Removal forum. Put a reference back to this post in your new thread.
