I am back! I just realized I did not know what a heatsink is... so here's what i did: I unpluged everything, opened up the side of the case and used the q-tip to clean all dust bunnies and babies... I saw 3 fans and cleaned them all, one at the back towards the top of the case, one at the front towards the lower part of the case, then there's one that facing up when I had the case down on its side, I assumed that the bars underneath this fan is the heatsink thing? Anyway, I used the q-tip and cleaned the best I could.

    I hope I didn't break anything!

I am running an Intel processor.

I downloaded Everest, the temp after an hour is reading:

    Motherboard 40C/104F
    CPU 41C/106F
    WDC WD800JB-00ETA0 36C/97F

Do they look normal now? or are we going to have shrimp on the barbie? :'(

Great stuff - well done :)

Sadly no shrimp or anything else - those temps look much better, especially the CPU, 74 down to 41
    You got it :)

If you have not done so check that all the fans are spinning when the computer is booted up.

Ok, I just open up the case again, all 3 fans are running... so I guess this is resolved again!

Thank you all for your help, once again I know this is a piece of cake to all of you but it means a lot to me to have your input and saved my pc from dying again. Thank you very very much! :)

sadly guys, my computer is shutting down again, this time more frequent than before... I don't have any viruses and I have checked the temp showing normal, except the motherboard is a little higher than the previous reading from 40C/104F to around 46C/115F and when it reaches around 49C/50C or so the computer would shut down. I am not sure that's the reason for the shut down tho....

Is there anything else I should check before I bring it to the store to have it fixed? I have been avoiding that because it takes forever for them to return the pc to me, please help! :(

PSU has been mentioned as a possible cause - lets have a look at the voltages before you go any further - use Everest and HWM and post both sets of results.

Thanks for the quick replay, I am at work now but will check the numbers this afternoon... I use my pc mainly for internet surfing, research and chatrooms etc, sometimes games from bigfish game website but not often.

I will post the results later today, thanks again!

Try replacing the CPU heatsink fan. It may not be running properly.

That motherboard temperature, although a little high should be within an acceptable range, however, you didn't give us any reading on the CPU. I would suggest that you replace any chasis or case fans with new ones. Unfortunately, a shop is going to charge you handsomely for fans. I would also investigate buying a good CPU fan/heatsink and having a shop replace this while using Artic Silver thermal compound. Be very specific and accept no substitutes.

You mentioned having a case fan (exhaust), a CPU heatsink/fan and a fan in your PSU. There may also be a much smaller fan on the chipset but chances are that this is just a heatsink. If you do have a small chipset fan, this too can be replaced and you can probably add a front intake fan. The key to cooling isn't how many fans one has, but rather how well air is circulated inside the case. If your computer is in any kind of a closed compartment in a desk, heat will have trouble dissipating.

I would send you here to buy fans for a fraction of what you'll pay a shop but someone who knows what they are doing should install these for you - particularly the CPU heatsink/fan. Maybe you want to buy the parts and then head to the shop.

Sorry to learn of your dilemma but I think its pretty clear that heat is one of your primary problems. Keep us posted.

    ;)

thank you for all your input... unfortunately I can't even get as far as reading the numbers before the pc shuts down again... and a blue screen pops out reading:

'A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

    Bad_Pool_Header

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any windows updates you might need.

If porblem continues, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup options, and then select Safe Mode.

    Technical information:

    ***STOP: 0x00000019 (0x00000020, 0xE2C3B538, 0xE2C3B538, 0x0C000003)

    Beginning dump of physical memory
    Phsical memory dump complete.
Contact your stystem administrator or technical support group for further assistance.'

I don't know what it meant but I didn't install anything new except the downloads from here... I tried safe mode to go back to previous setting but it won't let me do it either. I also have trouble rebooting the computer after each shut down.

so I am back in the office now to post this thread and let you all know that I will take it to the shop to see if they can fix it.. thanks for the link to the fans too and I will order the right ones accordingly.

you guys have been wonderful and supportive thru out, my pc is approaching 7 years old and with a beginner like me not knowing how to take care of my baby, it's amazing how it surived all these time! I will update you all again when my baby is out from the shop... in one piece...

You may want to check this out.

Your temperatures look fine and I would say you don't need to spend a nickel on any replacement fans at this point in time.

    ;)

edit - Thanks Dave - I've been out of pocket all day.

You are right, while the link doesn't work it has the Bad_Pool_Header on the link so I looked up the info on this topic... whatever I download did fix the problem for now, I have to try to boot up the pc so many times today to get it stable enough for me to download whatever it was to scan and fix some of the errors... now my pc is running again!

Can someone please tell me where I can download the full version of this quick fix bad_pool_header thing? It turns out I have over 1000 items needed to be fixed, but so far my pc is running just fine, it would be nice to get rid of the rest of the errors. Thanks for the input!
