Hi ncutt and welcome to the BBS,

Please try to choose a descriptive title. See the Forum Rule #3. I have edited it.

SORRY about that. I tried the chkdisk to no avail.

I was reading (somewhere) about Microtrend pro and Window SP3 not being able to run together. Could this be the culprit. I cannot seem to remove any programs either.

If you can't work in normal mode, boot into safe mode and see if things work there. Try running the uninstall there. You should be able to open and run basic programs.

You will need to tell us what you have tried, otherwise we will just cover the same ground.

You don't say if you can open programs any other way, like going to their .exe file and running it.

Open Task Manager and see if the system appears to be constantly busy. Are any programs listed as "Not Responding "?

If it only relates to the desktop, have you installed any desktop themes or other modifications.

If you think it relates to Trend Micro and SP3 and you cannot uninstall it/them in safe mode, you may need to run a "repair reinstall" of Windows using the SP2 CD.

Sorry, Matt, perhaps I am more of a novice. I have system restored in the safe mode. Cannot open any programs in the safe mode. I can sometimes left click and "run as" to get some programs to run. (Just found this out)
Cannot remove programs in the safe mode. I only seem to get on the internet and download files and transfer them to my thumbdrive.

I have tried regedit.exe, no viruses show on Microtrend Pro (I am able to run that from my lower task bar).

The task manager is not busy.

    Thank you......

When I saw "Run as ", I thought you could try going to Control Panel -> User Accounts, making up a new user and try using that, BUT, since the same basic problem happens in safe mode, I doubt it will be successful.

My only other suggestion would be run System File Checker, I will quote this from one of PeteC's replies I just came across:
If your computer uses Recovery Disks and not a full version of Windows, I am not sure if you will be able to run SFC.

Since safe mode is not working correctly and if SFC does not fix the problem, the next step I would take is a Repair Reinstall of Windows.

Maybes...see if the Antivirus may have quarantined important (system?) files or removed registry settings. I wonder about the "shell ", try running the ShelExView and suggestions from here:
