Hi, i just joined this forum today and i have a little problem.

My quick launch was working fine, but when i added a new shorcut to it and rebooted my computer, the new shortcut was gone. i have searched on google for a solution but none of them worked. i have tried: Locking the taskbar, unselecting group similar taskbar buttons in the taskbar properties, going in the quick launch folder and unselecting auto arrange and show in groups and i have also tried the "save settings on exit" reg tweak.

hope you guys can help me
    thanks for reading

    Hello DudeOnFire,

    *What's the shortcut to?

*What method are using to add it to quicklaunch? (details please: examples; left click, right click>context menu, copyNpaste, dragNdrop, desktop to quicklaunch toolbar, folder to quicklaunch folder....etc)

*How many shortcuts are in quicklaunch?

*Do you have some program such as ccleaner (for example) that is set to clean on startup and the cleaning includes invalid shortcuts?

*Do you have a 3rd party app that is setup to disallow changes to the desktop? Or similarly saves and restores previous setting on a reboot?

*Are you sure your logged in on an user (administrator privileged) account and on a reboot/shutdown are you sure your changes and user settings are being saved? (In the process of shutdown the screen should report "saving your personal settings" at some point.) Is there any problem with your shutdown that may be causing a rebuild of your account based on a modified default, upon bootup. Such would be reflected in "event viewer ".

*When you do make this shortcut try a right click properties check and make sure the path listed is not a shortcut to a shortcut, such as a desktop shorcut that you later delete. Usually a shortcut such as this will revert to a generic icon rather than disappear but it's worth some thought.

*When this shortcut is made have you used it to make double sure it is a good *.lnk? And that it is a link rather than a mis-dragNdropped file or program.

*i have 7 shortcuts, Show Desktop, My Computer, Firefox, Sonicstage, Songbird, Limewire and Windows Live Mail. (in order)

*just simple drag and drop from my desktop to the quick launch

    *i have never installed/used ccleaner

*i don't have any 3rd party program that does that

*there's only one account, and it's the admin's. i do see the "saving your personal settings" line while shutting down. (only for about a second though)

*i just checked and they all lead to an .exe

but the weird thing is that Show Desktop and My Computer stays at the same place and then the rest goes like this: Sonicstage, Songbird, Mozilla Firefox, Limewire then Windows Live Mail

Try running the Quick Launch Repair Tool here - scroll down to Quick Launch ....

    http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_qr.htm

    ----------
Are you saying you can't expand your ql bar and drag these icons around to rearrange them in anyway you see fit?

    ------------
Are any other changes you may make not being reflected or are lost on a reboot? You may wish to make a few as a test; change your wallpaper..add a desktop shortcut...move a couple of the quicklaunch shortcuts to your desktop...etc. Reboot and see if changes stick. Just want to check and make sure your account is not corrupt in some way.

im going to try that out now.

i can expand my quick launch bar and move my icons around but after a reboot, my icons go disarranged

i change my wallpapers alot and i have no problem with it, same with shorcut icons.

EDIT: i just tried the repair tool and it works, so the quick launch bar problem is fixed but now i have another problem after i used the repair tool, my desktop icons take more space than usual (the space around it). like it was a big icon or something

    and it's really bothering me....

EDIT2: nevermind i fixed the icon problem

thanks so much for your help :D

Wonderful! I was happy to help out and your most welcome. Thank you for the update. :)

I should have suggested and sent you to the linked Kellys fix first. It has a track record of working most often for your particular problem. Guess I was having one of those really late-in-the-night DAH! moments. :D
