I have Windows XP Media Edition (year?); came with my Gateway which I bought in mid 2007. Version 5.1, service pack 2. For the past week or 10 days, at least once a day, Microsoft automatic update attempts to install SQL Server 2005 security update (KB947109) and fails every time. I DO have SQL Server 2005, but not sure I'm even using it. Cannot seem to find any FREE info at MS support so figured it couldn't hurt to give you wonderful guys a try. Thanks.

First of all, I quoted the wrong KB. I should be KB948109, and I even typed it wrong in the body of my post. Last night I did a Search and found what I believe to be the install .exe file in C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download\Install. The file name is SQLServer2005-KB948109-x86-ENU.exe. There were also about 50 other files with KB948109 in the file names which appear to be attempts to actually install the update. Therefore, I am thinking the .exe file might be corrupt. My plan now is to delete the update .exe file and wait until MicroSoft again tries to download it to see if it runs OK. However, I think I'll just hold off a few days to see if I get a response to THIS post first.

Well, if you don't use SQL Server 2005, you could just uninstall it.

Next option would be to download the file from Microsoft Download & install it.

    Thank you Arie.
Think I will opt to uninstall SQL Server 2005. I have a sneaking hunch that it got installed when I installed Visual Studio 2005 which I later uninstalled. But even if I'm wrong, I cannot conceive at this time why or when I might use SQL Server. On the Add/Remove screen I find two other apparently related SQL Server programs, which I suspect will most likely go away when I remove the main guy. If not, I'll just bounce them also.
