Try going to Start > Run and typing sfc /scannow and clicking OK or pressing Enter. (note the space in the command)

It will take several minutes to complete the system check and may require you to place the original XP install CD in the drive.

The process will check your system for missing or corrupt files that are necessary for normal operation. It may or may not fix your problem but it's the correct way to start the hunt.

    coldasice,
Did you ever run a good virus/trojan scan as suggested by Arie in one of your recent past posts? Clipbrd.exe or an added nonsystem clipbrd.dll has been the target of a few virus/trojans. Pinned lists leading to favored on-line scanners can be found in this boards forum and subforum of General Security/Malwareware virus removal.

You say you ran clipbrd from the run line and it hung/lockedup. How about doing a search for clipbrd and seeing what shows up. Clipbrd.exe should be in your windows/system32 folder. If any other clipbrd.*** file is found or is found somewhere other than system32 folder (or possibly dll cache folder) , it would be most suspecious.

I would suggest that clipbrd.exe may be corrupt but since , as suggested, you have ran sfc /scannow, if it were missing or found corrupt it would have been replaced. When you did this (referring to running "sfc /scannow ") did it run without a problem?

Have you checked your event viewer for odd or related errors. Incidently, what happened, when running sfc, would be found in event viewer. The event will be displayed in the "System" section of Event Viewer. It will be identified in the "Source" column as "Windows File Protection ".
    How to use event viewer:
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&sd=tech

You have used the discription of "when I do this this nothing happens ", are you getting any error/warings at all or any other odd behaviours?

I hate to be redundant and am surely not trying to annoy you but myself and others can not tell what you have or have not done, based on board member suggestions, without your updates informing us. If you do something and skip the post update, we dunno....;)

    Now comes the redundant part....
Is there a clipbrd.exe in the windows/system32 folder? If so what happens when you click on it?

Knowing that you've virus scanned and come up clean is comforting, but not knowing what program or method you have used to do so still leaves questions?
*Have you been infected in the recent past?
*Does your program scan for and clean malware/adware and rootkits?
*Is it updated? Some don't and out of those that do, may not do this very well.
*Do you have anything such as lavasoft/adaware or spybot (just to name two of the more popular common ones)

If answers are only general rather than "specific/or quoted" the answers and suggestions can only be general rather than specific. It is the specifics or quoted errors or warnings that help lead to the root of the problem.
    Examples:
Yes, please quote any error or warning exactly.

This is not specific enough. It may have offered a reason why it could not copy to to the clipboard. It may also have a details button or link and when clicked on would have given details needed.

    -----
in mater of fact.. i ran avg.. :) and yes i have adaware and spy bot :) run both.. clean all 3 :)

all virus versions are up to date :)

    and for your reason..

it does not happen.. nothing at all happens..

i only told you what happend in my download manager.. when i try to copy a link inside it to then copy to browser.. cuz some times it *** up and i have to download it via browser...

and Ding "you cannot copy to clipboard "

hope that answers most of the questions to help me :)

if no please post a long message to tell me what to do! i need it fix. ( no need for long message though)

    Hello again,
Posts may be long but random cut/copy/paste problems have a past history of coming from many areas. Sources or root causes; virus/malware, program(s) the task it is being done in or between (one from another), hardware(mouse or keyboard for instance), services disabled or enabled, files, human factor:> task, method or item the user is applying to cut/copy/paste, MS office clipboard interference, etc.

Ideally the easiest way to figure this out was monitoring with the clipboard viewer. That is why I have focused attention on getting yours up and running. The fact that it isn't working as it should be needs to be cleared up. Again, many things may be causing this.

-------This is as short as I can get----------
Clipbrd: Try opening after each of the following...
*start it up and clear from within (which you can't do)
    *logoff/reboot
*Got an app that shares or hooks into clipboard, such as msoffice/word. Open word, copy and paste from within, clear its clipboard.
*services: some have found that starting or stopping the "service" clipbord helped. Default is disabled unless one needs this networked service and co-depent dde...but as is the "wonder of windows" needed or not it has worked for some.
*Got an app that may be hooked into it, msconfig startup...use a cleanboot diagnostic startup. Try opening clipbrd.
*replace it...delete, move it, uninstall and reinstall via control add/remove windows components (accessories), extract and replace from winxp CD.
*look for dupes via a search, making sure "folder options" are set to enable "show hidden and system files ". You mentioned doing a file search before but only mentioned finding the prefetch (*.pf). Shouldda' been more.
*think, did you or an app ever set a policy that has disabled clipboard. I would think a windows warning would speak up, but you never know.

    -------Trial--
*Log on in another user profile with admin privileges. See if problem remains.
*Restore points: restore to point that may be before the problem started, such as before you goofed up folder/file association
    =====================

If your looking for a short, fast "one size fits all answer ", your not going to get it (at least not from me). Perhaps another members imput may more suited to your needs, personalty and patience.

    SPECIFICS.....FEEDBACK

Come on coldasice, please give me something to work with here. I don't know what you did based on my suggestions and what the out comes were.

I have found something that may help but since this is one of those "new to me" things, I am still researching and looking for information on it. It is a tool being recommended and used by an MS MVP named Ramesh who has a good reputation for finding that hard to find fix. If you care to do some reading along with myself here's the google topic list:
    http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&...ult&cd=1&q=getopenclipboardwindow.zip&spell=1

    The tool is called GetOpenClipboardWindow.zip

Do I dare ask....;) In for a penny in for a pound...:)

Reportedly, you did try all my suggestions and in knowing that,

*If you used msconfig to do a diagnostic startup, did you also remember to go back and make sure it is set for a normal startup? ( Keep in mind that reduction of startups is not a bad thing. ) If you don't need them at startup take additional steps to keep them from starting up.

*Additionally if you used system restore to an older point and that still did not help, are you aware that you can reset it back to the point before you used it. In otherwords you can go backward and forward between your points.

Knowing system restore has been problematic for some users, I must also remind you that backups are critical if you do not want to risk losing important data. I hope you have done so, particularly when your computer is not running as it should.

    -------------------------
What does this mean? Wait....don't answer. Stay focused on task at hand which is getting clipboard to open as it should.

    coldasice,

    !!!!DETAILS!!!!

I am glad that your clipboard was freed and finally opened but I still do not know what application or file to point the finger (blame) at.

*What did the "GetOPenClipboardWindow" tool show as the file/application that was the causing problem?

*Was your copy paste operation successful after clipboard was freed?

    Well coldasice,

I have given this post my best shot. I sure hope you have gleamed enough knowledge from links and sub links on how to troubleshoot any future copy/paste issue, and how to use clipboard to monitor such. There is no way I can effectively help you based on your "attention to detail "s, facts and on "questions or feedback" of these. I have found myself using guesswork as this "chameleon" post has shifted or changed many times.

At this point I'm not even sure if this was a copy/paste problem or an app "nonresponse/slow to respond" issue. The post has gotten extremely threaded and very little has been accomplished.

    To sum up:
Just remember that random copy/paste/cut/move problems come in many flavors based on what you are attempting to do at the time and the method you are using. Google it. I think that you will find many have had the same problem and have posted a fix or work around for it.

I wish you the best, but I'm done. Perhaps another member may be able to understand more clearly what your problem(s) is(are). If you wish to continue perusing this may I suggest you start a new post and possibly include a link to this one. This one is way to long and many members will avoid it based on that alone.

One last parting shot......just for old times sake.... "DETAILS "....:)
I'm happy (ecstatic even) that the tool worked and clipboard functioned but you still have not answered if the copy/paste you were attempting succeeded as a result.

I'm so sorry for the bail and wish you good luck....:)
