    Hello,

I have a PC with Windows XP Service Pack 3. I am experiencing random system lockups (everything stops responding, forcing a manual restart).

I have two dumps that may or may not have been created when the system locks up (it doesn't blue screen that I can tell, but maybe it created the dump?).

Anyway, if someone could glance at these and see if they have any problems, that would be great!

    Thanks!

    Kelly

PS - I've since changed the settings on the computer to output kernel dumps, so if one of those gets spit out I will post here also.

VAL - MCi_STATUS register is valid
Indicates that the information contained within the IA32_MCi_STATUS
register is valid. When this flag is set, the processor follows the
rules given for the OVER flag in the IA32_MCi_STATUS register when
overwriting previously valid entries. The processor sets the VAL
flag and software is responsible for clearing it.

    UC - Error Uncorrected
Indicates that the processor did not or was not able to correct the
error condition. When clear, this flag indicates that the processor
was able to correct the error condition.

Your first dump is not relevant, but interesting ....
The second dated today has a Symbol Problem - please read this and debug the log using out tool.

    I would add ....
Sudden lockups can be caused by overheating - check out the cooling fans, dedust and try running with the case open (desktop only)

    Thanks for the response!

I followed the instructions on the link you sent, I will see if I can get the symbol problem worked out though.

As for overheating, I have been running it for the last few days with the side of the case off and a fan pointed in it, and there is still a problem with locking up.

Also, it locks up when running the windows memory test, so I'm thinking it's probably a hardware problem.

    Kelly

I'll come back to this later - time to eat, but note that you must remain connected to the internet while debugging.

I would be looking at the memory ......
so you could start by running Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool , but the most satisfactory way of testing is physically.

If you have a single stick of RAM switch it between slots and test. If you have 2 sticks run each separately in different slots and so on. Look for any combination of RAM stick + slot which gives a problem.
