Computer is randomly shutting down or freezing up. Have to shut it down at the power source to re-boot it. Event log shows a DHCP error whenever this occurs. Is the error due to the shut down or is the shut down caused by the DHCP error system is:
    HP Pavilion 540n
    512 memory
    XP OS service pack 2
    Linksys BEFW-1154 router
    2 four port USB hubs
This problem only started after the Windows update #951748 which conflicted with the ZoneAlarm program. I have gotten the ZoneAlam fix so there is no problem connecting to the Internet. I have searched the boards but have found no reference to this problem.

Lou - Welcome to the Board :)

If the DHCP is a simple Warning flagged in yellow I would not be concerned about that and it is highly unlikely to be the cause of your problem - I see the DHCP warning all the time :)

If you are convinced that your peoblems started with KB951748 - uninstall it and see if the problem is resolved.

I suspect that that is coincidental and wonder if your computer is overheating ...

Have you dedusted it recently? Everest should show you the temps of CPU and hard drives and the PSU voltages - post them here please. (Computer > Sensor in the LH pane)

    DHCP problem

    Pete,
Thanks for the quick response. I dedusted as you suggested (wow, it was way overdue). D/L the free version of the Everest program however I did not see any sensors for the CPU or motherboard in the free version. Do I need to get the pro version for the sensors. I will keep you updated on the results so far.
    Thanks again
    Lou

I don't see anything too out of line in that data although the Western Digital drive is running a little hot - they tend to run a little hotter than most other makes though, but 59 deg seems a little excessive to me. Which drive is the Operating System on?

The voltages look OK, but that does not exclude the Power Supply Unit from being a possible cause.

Always difficult to get to the root of these problems.

I am sticking with a heat problem for the moment - can you run with the case side off and maybe some auxillary cooling air from a portable fan and test?

    Random shutdown

I was thinking the same thing on the heat indicators. Will run with side panel off and a cooling fan on it.
    Tks again

You may be right, but I would look at the hard drive error - if this is the drive on which the OS is installed - although I suspect maybe not ....
Having said that my OS is on drive 1 - drives numbered from 0 and I have 3 internal drives - 0,1,2

I suggest you run the manufacturer's disk diagnosis software on both disks to clear them of suspicion before thinking of the PSU .....

    ExcelStore ....
    http://www.excelstor.com/en/download.asp
    Hitachi .....
    http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/download.htm
    Samsung ....

    Seagate, Maxtor, Quantum .....
    http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/downloads/
    Western Digital ....
    http://support.wdc.com/download/

I don't see the other 2 errors as being related to this problem.

Until tested, I would be suspicious of both HDD / PSU.

As Pete suggests, run the drive utilities.
My concern also is failing / weak PSU not providing proper voltage to HDD. This may cause bad writes while running and also incomplete writes when system randomly shuts down. Myself, I would replace/swap out PSU.

When the computer randomly shutting down. Is it related to the power saving mode application and settings?

    No.
Power saving mode event would not randomly occur (per shutting down).
I have not notice if you posted age of computer. Your model number / type of ram memory used suggests 4 to 8 years. If this is true and running original PSU, it would be my first suspect. Unfortunately with "almost failing" electronics, the best test is to replace/swap the component and does problem continue or stop.

    Dennis,
The system is a HP Pavilion 540n about 5 years old. 512 ram original PSU.

Yes, your approaching useful life for average PSU.
The only problem is OEM type computers may / may not requires OEM parts.. This will need to be answered by posters with experience repairing OEM computers.

For your convenience, I have included links for your specific model ....
HP Pavilion 540n Desktop PC (US) - Product Information
Motherboard Specifications - P4S333-M (Missouri) (see MOBO schematic - page bottom).

    diagonistic update:
occassionally on boot up screen get the message CMOS error detected-defaults loaded.

when system shuts down the green LED power indicator remains on
sometimes but not always the HDD activity LED remains on steady and not blinking.

Have removed all peripherals except mouse, Keyboard & Monitor. Have swapped monitor to smaller size trying to cut power consumption.
Have run chkdsk on all 3 drives all OK except #3 reported 6-7 index entries that were being deleted. All this to no avail.

I am currently working on the various links to diagnostic tools that have been provided.

    Thanks for the input.

May want to consider replacing your CMOS battery.
In my post / thread number 12 / click on Motherboard link, scroll to page bottom for schematic and pic of motherboard. See "Battery" location lower right corner.

    Update on random shut downs:
:)Think I have the computer back under control. I hadn’t checked on my virus checker report log in a couple months and when I did I saw that I had a heavy attack of Trojans back in May. Why, I can’t figure out as virus checker is always on.
Ran clean disk on all drives
    Ran chkdsk on all drives
    Defragged all drives
    Ran RegMechanic
    Ran Spybot S&D

Went to Black Viper & got their list of services and disabled or put in manual all services that weren’t vital. Went to crucial.com and ordered a 1GB memory stick.

The biggest improvement was when I edited the services. Speed is way up and haven’t had a shutdown in 2 days
Thanks again for all the input:D
