My laptop runs Win XP Pro and when connected to the Internet an icon, two traffic lights, is shown in the sys tray that indicates Internet activity by changing lights from red to green with arrows to indicate Internet upload or download.
My home system also runs Win XP Pro but I do not get the Internet activity icon in the sys tray. Can anyone give me advice on how to activate this useful icon?

    Hi. Some questions first:

1-) Did you, or someone else, installed some 3rd-party program in your laptop?

2-) What kind of Internet connection do you have at your home P.C.? A "regular" modem, or broadband?

If broadband, or anything that uses a Network Interface Card (a "NIC "), then open "Control Panel ", then "Network Connections ", and right-click the "Local Area Connection" icon. Choose "Properties ".

Then, in the "General" tab, at bottom, put a check-mark in "Show icon in notification area..." et voilà.

    Thanks for your reply.

I've installed the same software on both my laptop and home system, I use AOL to connect to the internet.

I use an internal modem on my home system as does my laptop.

I wish I could use broadband but our telephone provider hasn't actioned it in my area yet!!!!

Any more ideas would be very welcome.

Well... If in a regular modem, then just look at "properties" of the icon of your current Dial-Up NetWork Connection instead of the "Local Area Connection ".
And don't worry if this exact one doesn't exist. That's normal if you don't have a NIC installed.

Don't really know if AOL makes some changes in this set-up, but chances are they don't modify XP (at least, not SO much).

    Regards. jmmf.

Thanks for the programme links. Have downloaded them and will try them over the next few days. Will let you know if they're what I'm looking for.

I'm running cable right now....so I'm doing this from memory. (Uh oh)
    Double-click My Computer
    Double-click Dial-Up Networking.
Select 'Connections' from the Menu Bar
    Settings.
Put a check in 'Show an icon on taskbar after connected'.

    Or something like that?
