As far as CPU usage it seems to just depend on what's running. At the time of this post the only application I'm running is firefox and that is jumping between 34-56% while typing this reply.

Video is unwatchable and even the the startup tune played on windows xp is really fragmented as it attempts to play when i boot this laptop up. The hard disk just seems to run and run! Installing or removing any program takes forever too. I've purchased a new laptop since this one is just a paperweight but I would like to get it working again if possible. Any help you could offer is greatly appreciated.

Lets trim down the unnecessary startups. Scan again with HijackThis and place a check next to the following entries.

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [OpwareSE4] "C:\Program Files\ScanSoft\OmniPageSE4.0\OpwareSE4.exe "
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [CanonMyPrinter] C:\Program Files\Canon\MyPrinter\BJMyPrt.exe /logon
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ISUSScheduler] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\UpdateService\issch.exe" -start
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SSBkgdUpdate] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Scansoft Shared\SSBkgdUpdate\SSBkgdupdate.exe" -Embedding -boot
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ATIPTA] C:\Program Files\ATI Technologies\ATI Control Panel\atiptaxx.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [RemoteControl] "C:\Program Files\CyberLink\PowerDVD\PDVDServ.exe "
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Reminder] %WINDIR%\Creator\Remind_XP.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [POEngine] "C:\Program Files\PokerOffice\POEngine.exe" C:\Program Files\PokerOffice

Close all other windows then click Fix Checked.
    Close HijackThis.

And some general housecleaning. Download ATF Cleaner by Atribune and save it to your Desktop.
    • Double click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    • Check the boxes to the left of:

      • Windows Temp
      • Current User Temp
      • All Users Temp
      • Temporary Internet Files
      • Prefetch
      • Java Cache
      • Recycle bin

    • The rest are optional - if you want it to remove everything check "Select All ".
    • Finally, click Empty Selected. When you get the "Done Cleaning" message, click OK then exit.
    Reboot

Now open My Computer and right click Local Disk C:, then select Properties
    Select the Tools tab
In the Error Checking section, click Check Now
In the Options dialog that pops up, check both boxes, then click Start
You should receive a message that disk checking cannot be run, and would you like to run it at the next startup ..... click Yes
    Now restart your computer

Once you are logged on again, go back to the same location and select Defragment Now
Click Defragment in the window that opens, then sit back and wait for it to complete
Do not run any other programs or open any windows during the defragment process .... that will only slow it down.

Once it completes, restart the computer once more and see if there's any improvement.
