Thanks guys. Arie's test install of the SCM looks encouraging.

While waiting for your latest replies, I tried the troubleshooting tips sent by SkillSoft. Unfortunately, my Shockwave and Flash players were disabled by one of those tips. These players are required by the SCM. This makes me nervous because I was never able to get Shockwave installed with the IE 5.5 sp2 browser in my Win95 laptop (I'd have preferred to install the SCM in my laptop).

So before I continue with your recommendations, I need to reinstall Shockwave and Flash in my 98SE desktop. I'll let you know how it goes...

Got the Shockwave/Flash thing figured out (couldn't reinstall Shockwave so I used the Gateway GoBack feature--saved my tail).

Tried the command lines shown above. Looks like the reg file exists, but I'm still seeing 'Invalid switch' after 'regedit /s c:\clrpol.reg'. Is there a way to accomplish this using my registry editor?

    Thanks,
    Dean

    BTW--is my config.sys file okay?

    Regedit is your registry editor!

OK do it without the /s but you will need to answer prompts to do it, so answer yes "that you do want to make these chages etc ".

Did it without the /s (regedit c:\clrpol.reg) and didn't get any prompts; just 'Importing file (100% complete)'. Guess I'm good to go for another install attempt. Keep your fingers crossed...

Hey guys. Here's the latest news in my SCM odyssey:

After implementing Mike's recommendations, I successfully installed the SCM from geolearning.com using Arie's link. Then I logged into RHI SkillPort to get course material, but was unable to download course content to the SCM. Apparently, the geolearning SCM won't accept downloads from a non-geolearning site. I uninstalled this version, having proven it could work on my machine.

Next, I tried to download the SCM from RHI SkillPort and got the very same administrator privileges message I started out with. Moving on, I successfully downloaded and installed the SCM using the manual install link provided earlier by SkillSoft.

Then I ran into serious trouble. When I tried to log in to RHI SkillPort again my browser crashed. Rebooted and got the same result with every subsequent login attempt. The browser repair option in Add/Remove Programs didn't help.

Contacted SkillSoft Customer Support and was advised to install Sun Java (J2RE 1.4.2) to correct the problem. At the Sun website my browser crashed yet again when I tried to download J2RE 1.4.2. SkillSoft Support then recommended uninstalling the SCM and going back to the Sun site for another download attempt. I did so and my browser continued to crash when I tried to download the software.

Now SkillSoft Support is advising me to install a newer build (5.00.3810) of the Microsoft Java Virtual Machine. Although the JVM 5.0.3167 version I have now is admittedly old, I'm not sure that an update is going to help. As I recall, the SCM is supposed to work with browsers going back to IE 4 using even older versions of JVM.

At this point I'd like to get back to where I started--having a fully functional IE 5.5 sp1 browser--before trying anything else. You guys are very knowledgeable so I am again asking for your help in resolving this latest issue. Please post any ideas you have for getting my browser back to normal.

    Thanks,
    Dean
