I am using Win xp home sp2 w/ IE 6.0.2900 and Comcast is my internet service provider and comcast is my home page. I have shortcuts to Internet Explorer and until a day or so ago I could open as many browsers as I cared to. Now I can only open 1 browser at a time with the shortcuts. Trying to open more than one-nothing happens. I can go to file-new window and open as many as I want. I have tried search here unsuccessfully. Can anyone help or refer me to this problem should it already be available in the forum. Is it possible the problem is not with IE but with Norton 360 v2? Thank you.

Hi bsilverfox. Is there is a reason you haven't upgraded to Internet Explorer 7? Internet Explorer 6 is outdated and isn't as secure and user friendly as Internet Explorer 7 is. You can download Internet Explorer 7 here. Internet Explorer: Get It Now

See if updating to Internet Explorer 7 resolves your problem. If not then have you tried different Internet Explorer shortcuts? One of them could not be working properly. Also try disabling Norton 360 as well as all other backround programs you are running and then try to open more than one browser window. Let me know what happens. Thanks! :)

I have not upgraded to IE 7 for fear of creating a problem with such an upgrade. I guess I have felt "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" I do not believe "restore" works with my XP and I back up monthly to an external hard drive and have never experienced trying to use that in the event of a problem. I have several IE shortcuts and they all now produce the same results-only 1 browser. I have closed all apps including 360 and that did not help the problem. Thank you for your response. I may go to IE 7 and hope the upgrade is seamless and trouble free one day soon when I have the time. In the meantime, the problem I described is not a serious hindrance since I can use the File menu option to open as many browsers as I need. I am just curious as to what might have caused this sudden change as I have not made any setting changes recently in IE. Thank you again for your help

Only thing I can think of to check: make sure to uncheck Reuse windows for launching shortcuts from IE's Tools > Options > Advanced (under the Browsing header.

Wow! Bingo!! Thank you Arie. That did the trick. I am not sure how that got checked because this problem appeared out of the blue but upon following your directions my shortcuts immediately will open any number of browsers.

    Thank you again!!!

    I'll take a shot....

Open Internet options and the advanced tab. Scroll down to the entry "reuse windows for launching shortcuts" deselect that and see if you open a new window with each shortcut. If you had IE7, you could used tabbed browsing and have IE open in one window with each shortcut opening a new tab.

I don't remember much about IE as you can tell by my signature so other than that little bit I would have to defer to someone who actually uses IE.....

Arie beat me to it, Man am I a slow typist!

You're welcome. It could have been set after a Windows Update to IE. I think checked is the default.
