    what we have:
server 2003 SBE (using as domain/exchange/dhcp/dns/application svr)

    what we want:
to move the domain/exchange/dhcp/dns to a new 2003 server. leaving the old one to act as just an application svr.

when im googling terms to find out how, it doesnt give me what i want, only upgrades from 2000 to 2003.

can anyone help/point me in the right direction?
i hope there is no issues migrating/moving from SBE?

    thanks

You'll want to add the new server to the domain as a second domain controller, then demote the current domain controller by way of a graceful demotion. That should automatically promote the new server to primary domain controller. Several search terms there. ;)

Here are some more if you're using Active Directory. You'll want to transfer FSMO roles, and move the existing or create a new Global Catalog.

thanks for the reply. little more complicated than i thought, but maybe thats because its the first time iv looked

Ok, So setup a second 2003 server, set dns to 1st svr, install DNS and run dcpromo. select aditional domain, next to the end...

I am using AD, so i need to move thr FSMO roles:
So carry this out, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/324801 which moves the below:
    Schema Master Role
    Domain Naming Master Role
RID Master, PDC Emulator, and Infrastructure Master Roles

    then dcpromo /forceremoval ?

    Hi Steve,

I had hoped someone more knowledgeable and server environment experienced would chime in here. My post above was based on the fact I'm currently studying up on the same thing because I am faced with the same task, though with some differences. First, and probably the biggest difference is that I don't have Small Business Server in the mesh. SBS is different critter where tasks such as this are concerned. While trying to verify the procedures you posted, I came across something one might consider a wrench in the gears, and you should definitely do some more in depth research, especially if you had intentions of adding another SBS.

Backup Domain Controller in a Small Business Server Domain

Basically, this means that your current SBS must remain the Primary Domain Controller as long as it's part of the domain.

Just a bit more snooping around did confirm my last post ...... the existing SBS must be, and will insist on being, the PDC, carrying the FSMO roles, etc. Might want to consider instead adding another system as an application server.

thanks, yes i had heard about this. sbe great at time of first install... then an issue when upgrading.. so in future i will tend to steer clear.

still. i will be migrating to a 2003 server os, not sbe because of such issues.
