    Hi Lis :)

    First, the most common cause(s) of Ad-aware hanging in my experience are;

    1. Temporary files - Use ATF Cleaner to clean temps
    2. System Restore points - sometimes removing all but the most recent restore point will help.

    Now, Ad-aware SE is very outdated, and there are no longer even updates available. Since it's not recommended nor productive to run scans with an out-of-date signature database, I recommend you uninstall and install the latest version, should you wish to continue using Ad-aware. I believe the latest release is Ad-aware 2008

    Appreciate your reply noahdfear. Ad-Aware 8 will not function on Windows 98se. Spybot, Agnitum and AVG 7.5 are the remaining programs in use. What other free programs may be available, to your knowledge. Please advise. Thanks for your time.

    Go Steelers

    I'm unaware of any, but I've moved your topic to the General Security forum where it will hopefully get more views and possibly some recommendations. :)

    I find Spyware Terminator works very well. With Win 98 you can use it for scans, just not for realtime protection.

    If you go to their homepage, on the very bottom(in small type) is system requirements. Click on it and you will see what I was talking about.
