First of all, let me say that I didn't even know there was a SP3 for XP. I just saw it as a sticky on this forum, so that might be part of my problem. I do have SP2.

My problem is that I keep getting the yellow warning icon in my tray saying "updates ready to install ", I try to install them, I get a message saying "installation complete ", and several seconds later the icon pops up again. For some reason, I cannot get Update KB92779 ti install and it has been this way for a while. If not having SP3 could be the problem, why would I have never gotten a warning about intalling SP3?

Another strange problem I have with Windows is that my "Search" function has disappeared. Can anyone tell me what would make this happen. Either is mesed up or it's hidden somehow and I miss it a great deal when trying to find certain files. I cannot even use IE's search function.

The rollout of SP3 via Automatic Updates is imminent - it has been available for some time by direct download or through Windows Update itself. MS chose to release SP3 in stages - maybe to save on band width, and the final stage is imminent - actually here now I see ....
In future please stick with one problem per thread - gets very confusing and inefficient otherwise.

    However ....

Run System File Checker - Start > Run > type in sfc /scannow > Enter - noting the space in the command. You will need your XP CD to hand - retail and not a recovery CD - which has the same Service Pack included as the install on the computer.

Windows search is very problematic and inefficient most of the time - I suggest a third party search engine which is far more powerful than the Windows one and is freeware - Agent Ransack - I have used the Pro version for many years.

Thanks guys, I believe that update did the trick. I rebooted and did not get the update warning. I actually found that update before I came here, but was unsure of it was what I needed.

I wanted to try the fix for my search function, but I can't find my XP disk. Is the search function suddenly seemingly becoming corrupt not an unusual thing?

One more thing and I'm not trying to be a bad boy if this is bad etiquette, but as long as I am here could I bother you with a question about Mozilla? I use Mozilla and I was just wondering if anyone could tell me what setting on Mozilla will allow me to view all the graphical content of a page? I'm missing a lot of things including clickable option boxes.
