I let iTunes update itself on Friday, to v7.7 (just iTunes and QT - removed the Safari offering - quite happy with Firefox). Now it won't close down - hit the X or File-Exit and it hangs. Right click on the task bar entry and Close, and it goes with the usual MS queries (not responding, etc). Strangely, the system tray icon doesn't disappear with the program until I pass the mouse over it. Anyone else found this?

Also noticed that a new CP applet has appeared - MobileMe Preferences - don't recall asking for it and there doesn't seem to be any uninstall. Not a problem as far as I can see but it seems like another piece of Apple software sneaked on.

(PC is a Vaio laptop running Vista Business).

    Steve,

I also updated my iTunes/Quicktime yesterday. I did not have the problem you mentioned and didn't notice the Mobile Me in Control Panel. I just checked to see if I had it and it was there. Like you, I didn't agree to it. I found out that if you go to Add/Remove, you can uninstall it by removing Apple Mobile Device Support. The Mobile Me icon disappeared after I did this. Since I don't have an iPod, I figured I didn't need it. My kids have one but, then again, they have their own computer. Hope that helps.

I wonder if this uninstalls just MobileMe or other will disable my iPod connection? Perhaps I'll leave it there for the time being.

The iTunes glitch is one of those things I'd like to fix out of a desire for tidiness - but can wait a while as it's not a problem now I know it's there; I only run the program once a week (as a conduit to update a dozen or so podcasts on my iPod). I thought I'd post it here to see if it's common.

Knowing somebody else has the same issue is reassuring - not that somebody else is having problems but, rather, that it's an issue that is more likely to get fixed by the supplier (Apple in this case)!

    Thanks for the reassurance :D

    Steve,

I'm not sure if any of this will help, but I'll throw it out there. From the Apple site, this is what MobileMe is all about. Basically, "MobileMe keeps all of your information in an online server, or "cloud." So no matter where you go or what device you use, everything is in sync. "

As far as the hanging, I found this thread on the Apple discussion board. I will say that I have opened and closed iTunes several times during the past couple of days and haven't had it hang yet. I have, however, gotten Microsoft's 'send an error report" message a couple of times.

Not sure if any of that helps though. Hopefully, Apple will put out a fix for the problem.

    Mike,

Thanks for the post. I am running nod32 on the laptop in question and will give those changes a try.

I'm running NOD32 as well - setting the exclusions in v2.7 seems to have worked. Will probably update to v3 in near future (when I have time)...

    Thanks, Mike.;)

I have iTunes 7.7 on one computer and iTunes 7.3 on another. Until I read this I always thought it was a computer issue, (different problem), so I will remove version 7.7 and replace it w/ version 7.3, since that seems to run smoother.
I shut off the auto updates on my 7.3 computer, and recommend you do that also. I've heard, and experienced various issues w/ the versions subsequent to 7.3.1.3
I had an update to this version that was nothing but problems, so I reverted back to this version and have had no troubles since.

    Steve,

You're welcome and glad to hear that the solution seems to have helped. Let's hope it sticks. We'll also hope for no problems when you upgrade.

    Andrew,

I hope the solution also helps you. Let us know how you come out.

Now updated NOD32 to v3 - uninstalled v2.7 first as recommended. Haven't had to make any tweaks to the new version, though I notice it sometimes gets a bit busy and makes Vista slow down for a few minutes. I'm now working through the settings to see if there's one that's causing unnecessary activity. After all, I want it to scan incoming files and check files when they're opening but not to take over the PC.

Balance the response to the risk...

Always need to find that balance, don't we. Hopefully, you can find the setting that is creating the problem. My son is having some iTunes freezing problems also. Once he connects, the program freezes. The funny thing is it will work on the iTunes I have installed. It will also work on the same system, that my son has in on, but in another User account. That one really confuses me. I need to find time to take a look at it. If I find the solution, I'll post back.

Mike, I just loaded iTunes 7.3.1.3 on a new HD and occasionally when you restart a song it won't return to the beginning, but starts where the song last left off. Not sure what to think, as it's very occasional. No real pattern, that I can see anyway.

Hopefully Apple will get things fixed for everyone soon. I still need to find time to sit down and look at. Seems like time is at a premium right now.
