On the Windows XP login screen, three users are listed, only two of them have the " # unread mail messages" notice line, one user does not get the notice.

Recently rebuilt our home PC which runs Windows XP Pro and we uses Outlook 2003. Setup my own Outlook email account and all seemed to be working ok, including getting the message on the Windows login page where you see my three users.

Then I setup the second and third User's email account. All seemed ok. Then proceeded to add more programs, apply various updates including from Microsoft and fine tuning applications.

Now, on my own / main login ID which is an Administrator, the note on the XP login about "unread mail messages" is gone! It remains there for the other two users.

I have run MS PowerToys utility, TWeak UI and had no success with repair, or disable and enable. Other user's ID still show message, mine, the first setup does not.

Looked at the Registry entry for 'UnReadMail' under Current Users, was had no entries for my account. Checked for other two accounts, it has their KEY of their email address and variables.

I added the key for my email, then all variables manually, for my own, same as found for other IDs. No effect. I ran the Tweak.UI to 'Repair' and it completely removed the entry.

Using Tweak.UI, I disabled the option for 'all users', restarted and found, no one had the message. So logged in and 'enabled' it for just current User, myself, restart XP and found other two had it turned back on and had the notice, my account did not.

I checked and found still, the KEY under my Current-User UnreadMail was missing, so added just the KEY and my email address. I ran the Tweak.UI to repair, it removed it again.

Ran Tweak.UI and disabled for 'all users' then enabled for 'current user' (myself) and restarted XP, again other two users have the notice, main User ID does not.

SO, why would XP think one User out of three in XP Pro, does not want or does not have this option selected. And thus Tweak would remove added items for one User. And would turn on for ALL when select to enable for only one.

While many want to 'disable' the "unread mail messages" notices, some MS docs explain how to stop for only select users, I actually want to enable it!
...I would prefer to enable for only my Account if possible as well.

    thanks!

Do you by chance have multiple email accounts? This feature will "break" if you have multiple email accounts, meaning no unread mail count will be displayed. It's a matter of debate if this happens as soon as you have 2 email accounts, or if you have 3 or more.

    Mickzer,

Thanks for the link to the site with the Registery fix. This did not work before my runs with Tweak.UI nor after. Did not help.

    Arie,

Yes per my original message, I setup myself and then added two more Users, and setup their email accounts as well. All three Users have separate email, all via the same Pop3 source.

This was working fine for over a year or two, before the new hard drive and new Windows XP build and new fresh setup.

You say "break" after 2 or 3 email accounts... read this elsewhere but no details there either. It was working fine a month ago, on the previous hard drive, same three Users and email setups.

The "break" leads to no "unreal mail" message for one of the three only?
So does this break just 'happen' and more so, how do I fix it?

    thanks and curious more,
    Frolin

No, that's not what I mean. Does your (single) account 'hold' 2 or more email addresses? Some users have multiple email accounts, and that's where the problem exists.

I doubt this is the case. I also doubt we're going to get this fixed. You tried several times with the on/off registry entries and it doesn't work, so ....

    Arie,

Thanks for the reply. Did not understand question on email accounts.

Only have one email account for my user ID.
Same for other two Users, one unique email account setup for each.

Odd is, it worked for a year or two with the previous build on this PC, but with the new hard drive, new setup of XP and Outlook, same User IDs and emails, it was working, then as you say "broke" at some point days/week later during maybe some MS web-update.
