I purchased a game download. However, when downloading the file, I have the following problem.

The instructions say, "2) Click on the downloaded file and install it. [If the file ends in dm.exe, click OPEN. Otherwise, click SAVE and save it to a place you'll remember later, such as your desktop.] "

The file does end in dm.exe.....however, OPEN is not an option. I have RUN instead, as well as SAVE. RUN literally does nothing. When I click RUN, it appears to download most of the way, and then the dialog box disappears and nothing has happened. The checkbox to have the dialog window close upon completion of download is unchecked, meaning it shouldn't disappear until I tell it to. Regardless, the window disappears and nothing happens.

So I try SAVE. No matter what location I save to, whether Desktop, or a folder, or an external thumb drive, the following happens.

First, "Do you want to run or save this file?" ----> SAVE

    I choose a location.

    Then I get this:

SKIP and CANCEL both prompt me if I want to cancel the download. YES cancels, NO takes me right back here. The only option is CONTINUE.

My next box is the User Account Control dialog. It tells me "Windows needs your permission to continue." Options are CONTINUE and CANCEL.

    CANCEL gives me this:

Would appear that things are going OK, but that disappears in less than a second (I had my fingers ready to go with Print Screen, lightning quick  ) and there is no file downloaded. Everything disappears and nothing has happened just as when I hit RUN originally.

If I hit CONTINUE, this is the result:

Hitting TRY AGAIN only gives me a repeat of the same message. Here my attempt ends, as I can either TRY AGAIN until the end of time, or cancel the download.

I am running and attempting to download as the administrator - there shouldn't be any issues with permissions and parental controls are not an issue as admin. I tried disabling UAC but that merely took me straight to the bottom message about needing permission, bypassing everything else.

How am I supposed to get this file onto my computer?

Hi and welcome to the BBS,

Look into whether it might be an Antivirus or Antispyware (Windows Defender?) that is blocking it. Disable them.

Thanks! I would not have guessed that (obviously I did not), because none of the windows I got said anything about anti-virus blocks. But disabling the PC-cillin that comes with the computer did the trick.

Nobody at the "official" Windows help board came up with an answer that worked.

Ah, that's good! Thanks for letting us know how it went.
