OK that seems to be confirming a disk or file system issue!

Better let it run, if it continues to progress even if it takes hours.

But if it sticks at 6% for hours then we have a problem!

Let me know in 30 or 40 minutes.

We don't have much choice now, let it run!

Go do something else for a while and forget it, watched pot never boils!:)

Report back in an hour or more!

allrighty. I am at work right now, i will be leaving at 5pm(in 45 minutes) The battery should last all the way home. I will update you before i leave, or if something changes before that.

Outta curiousity, i have a hard drive case that allows me to put a laptop HD in it, and use it as an external. if it turns out that the drive is now hosed, what is the chance of me getting the files i want off of it, and not harming my other computer in the process?

Don't think it would harm the other computer.

Attached to another computer where it is not the bootable system drive it should be easier to deal with.

But it depends on what we are fixing here. If File system the HD will be OK.

    We wait I guess.

I will be away for an hour on an errand.

home now, still at 6%. ran all the way home. it is a toshiba tablet pc if that matters. hard drive still doing the revving thing, and the bar at the bottom that scrolls across changing colors as if it were doing something, is not moving. and the saga continues...

OK time to power it off and do the rest of the steps in post #14.

IF it even boots now. Not good to power off during any disk write much less a Chkdsk!

    But no choice!

mickzer get off the edge of your chair and relax!:)

ok, still tried to run chkdsk, i cancelled it, and booted to normal mode, did the tasks, the first 2 found some stuff, a lot of registry stuff, mostly non existant files. i didnt write them down, but seemed to be about the same as last time i ran it. x clean finished with no errors found. hung on shutdown, with blank(light blue) screen. still able to move cursur though. still hanging at the moment, to see if it finishes. been a couple minutes now.

i have also found that add/remove programs is gone from the control panel. And, after a long boot, it will run ok in regular mode now, but it still takes about 10 minutes to get there. I have no network connectivity, but am able to download to a thumb drive from my other comp and install things on it. Will hang on shutdown of both safe and regular modes. would downloading and reinstalling SP3 do anything for me? i am going to remove all my files from the computer today, before i continue mucking with it.

Good idea, get everything backed up first.

Then look at the restore points and see if you can go back in time.

After a restore is done or if a restore is not available do the below.

To try to fix the Control panel and ASPI try the below.

    Start-Run
    type
    sfc /scannow

Then as a general system tonic to verify all DLL's etc do the below.

    Download Dial-A-Fix (DAF)
    http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix#...C_and_articles

Have XP CD available in case DAF needs a file.

Check all boxes on the screen (clear any restrictions if it shows any)
    Then click GO!

When the entire page is finished click the HammerHead at bottom to go to the second DAF page.

Here 1 at a time do the below

    Repair Permissions
    Reset networking

Watch for any File not found or other errors and make note as this may lead to the fix!

    Reboot retest!

    Get back!

To get the actual HD make and model you will need to look on the HD itself!

well, i managed to get my files backed up, only losing some pictures to data cyclical errors. I am having more trouble with the computer hanging also. The scannow brought up a dos box for a second, then it went away, and sdidnt seem to do anything and the dial a fix could not initialize

ok, i managed to make a new administrator user, and that seems to open ok, i have the scannow running at the moment, man this thing is a mess

edit: seems to be hanging about 6% of the way through, with the same revving of the hardrive like the chkdsc did. It is in a box that says windows file protection. "please wait while windows verifies that all protected files are intact and in their original versions "

well, nothing i have done is helping. I have resolved myself to reinstalling the operating system. Luckily the original owner of the computer made a clone of it after he loaded everything. So i can reload everything. Here's the issue, when i do this, it says error writing to drive d: abort, etc. which is also kind of wierd, as the HD was c: and the dvd drive was d: A tech guy at my work seems to think the hard drive is bad. Could whatever my son did ruin the harddrive, or is it just a coincidense? It was perfectly fine until th day after he spent all night on it. I dont want to buy a new HD if i dont have to, what do ya think?
