xpcolin - Welcome to the Board :)

Right click My Computer icon > Manage > Services & Applications > Services ....

Scroll down the list to Shell Hardware Detection and double click on it. In the dialogue which opens is the Service Started? If not ensure it is set to Automatic and start - you may need Administrative rights to make changes here.

Then scroll up to Remote Procedure Call and check that that is started and on Automatic

If both of the above are started then I do not have an immediate solution for you.

Alternative is Control Panel > Add Hardware - is that working?

I don't think the Add New Hardware will do what you want. Have you checked that the USB cable is OK, tries another USB port - preferably on the back of the case if a desktop.

    You could try ....

Steps 1-6 in the URL you posted, then, still holding down C on the phone navigate to the .inf file and right click on it > install.

You do this at your own risk - there is no way I would like to recommend a procedure which could affect your phone, but as I read it these are just drivers you are installing, not flashing the phone.

No, but any type of firmware flashing is 'heart in the mouth stuff' :)

You are trying to install the drivers for a phone??

Find the model number of the phone. Go to the manufacturer's website (Sony Ericsson?) navigate to the phone section or go to the Support/Download webpage and search for the phone model. The downloads for your phone model should include the drivers and probably software to "manage" the files you want to load onto it.

After you install the drivers/software (restart if it requests to do so), connect the phone with the computer running. If there is no pop-up box saying the phone is connected, go to Start -> All Pograms and open the "Sony Ericsson" (phone) program [Edit: or look in the Notification Tray, next to the time, look for an icon for the phone software, you may need to left-click, right-click or double-click on the icon].

Do you know the model number of the phone? If not, this should help you:
Sony Ericsson - Products - Mobile phones

This is the software download page for the UK:
Sony Ericsson - Support - Software
    This is for the US:
Sony Ericsson - Support - Software

The PC Suite is to organise files. The Media Manager is for music and videos.

If you are having trouble using the Sony website, they use a lot of Java and Flashplayer. You may need to update those on your computer.
    java.com: Java + You
    Adobe - Adobe Flash Player
