I was away from the computer for a couple of hours and it shut down but did not power down. When tried to restart would not boot, it hangs up at the windows XP screen. The computer starts in safe mode but when I shut down again it hangs up. Did a restore to the date just prior to a windows update which was two days ago but did not resolve the issue.

I have HIJACK installed on the computer however while in safe mode I am unable to access the internet so that I can share the results for help. Currently I am utilizing a different computer to reasearch the issue.

Is there a way when in safe mode to access the internet that I'm not aware of? The computer is a lap top with wireless internet connection.

    Would appreciate any suggestions.

    Thanks,

    Thanks

    Hi rcflyerbob

    Welcome to the BBS!

Ok you should have internet access in Safe Mode networking!

If so do the below, if not get these burnt to a CD and do it!

And do in exact order given!

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------
These to be run in Safe mode!

D/L install and run ATF-Cleaner clear all except passwords in all browsers you have. Run repeatedly until no more found.

    http://www.majorgeeks.com/ATF_Cleaner_d4949.html

D/L and install CCleaner (SLIM): Clean temps and registry. Run both (temp and registry) repeatedly until no more found.

    http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------

Quick check for malware in safe mode

    D/L Xclean_Micro http://www.xblock.com/download/xclean_micro.exe
No install, run it delete all it finds decline to reboot on each item found, until the program finishes then reboot.
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Still in Safe Mode

In services stop and disable all of the below just to get them out of the way for now for trouble shooting purposes.

Nothing is un-installed or deleted only disabled from running!

They can be put back anytime later but I would not, as none of them are needed by most home users and very few business users. Basically stuff M$ thought you should have.

Disabled uses no memory (RAM) and no CPU cycles.
Manual uses the RAM but a small amount of CPU, they use even more RAM and CPU if Auto and not started, and even more if Auto and started..

Now in this case we disabling for trouble shooting purposes. But when we finish if you leave them all off until it is noticed that you need one (not likely for 99%) then it can be enabled.

Leaving these all off, then becomes a performance tweak/boost as they free some RAM and CPU cycles! Special note. If you are going to pick and choose then be aware that the small amount of RAM and CPU cycles of each one individually is not significant but as a group it is! So if you need most of them (or just think you do because you don't) then just as well enable them all)!

    DNS Client
    Fast User switching
    Indexing service
    Messenger
    Net logon
    Net.TCP Port Sharing
    NetMeeting Remote Desktop Sharing
    IPsec services
    QoS RSVP
    Remote Registry
    Uninterruptable power supply
    Universal Plug and play
    Web Client
    Windows media player Network Sharing

IF you are using a wired network card and "NOT" using wireless on this computer then you can
    also disable

    Wireless Zero configuration

This is only used on computers with a wireless NIC like a Laptop. Do not disable Wireless Zero configuration on a Laptop. Has nothing to do with other wireless hardware like wireless routers etc.

In short if this computer has a CAT 5 or 6 cable and no ability to connect wirelessly if that cable is unplugged, then you can disable Wireless Zero configuration.

This is not to be confused with Wired Auto Config do not disable that!
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------

After all above is done in Safe Mode the reboot to normal mode and report the results.

There are a couple more things to do if all is now seemingly well and perhaps more if XClean found anything!

    Mike

I kept thinking about the recent windows update and was sure it must be at least part of the problem. So what I did while in safe mode was go to msconfig and uncheck all auto start programs and did a normal reboot. This seems to have fixed the probem. Now I'm not sure if I should go forward with the steps you recommend or just wait and see if the problem returns.

    Any thoughts ?

    Thanks,

    Hi Bob

No that is not a fix! Its more of a cover up or stick your head in the sand and hope it goes away thing!

And what you did would not indicate an SP3 issue.

Stopping things with Msconfig? What all did you stop? Surely you need some of them!

If you stopped all then you need to re-enable one thing at a time and reboot untill you find the one thing that causes the issue. Then let us know what that is so we can help you correct it.

As for doing my last post! Don't be intimidated by that 10 minute process. It is all a good thing even if you have no real issues mostly like maintenance! Should be done!

These are most of the files I stopped from auto loading, however they are are now back and all seems to be working alright.

    cctray
    QOELoader
    CAVRID
    cafw
    capfasem
    capfupgrade
    cfmon

I'm going to try and work through the recommended steps.

    Thanks,

    Hi Bob

    Just as I thought!

    QOELoader is the Crub antispam!
CTFMon is Alternative User Input for MS Office

All the other services were your Computer Associates Antivirus and while they were off you were exposed and unprotected!

All of these should be running with the exception of ctfmon (not really necessary) it is mostly useless for most people and harmless!

    Most?

Well if all runs OK now what else did you leave diabled in MSConfig? One of these must be your problem!

Reenable them 1 at a time and reboot until you boot up with the issue.

When you reboot and come up with the issue then the last thing you enabled is your problem. Go back and disable it and let us know what it is.

"Try" to do the recomended steps! So simple no need to try just do it!

    Hi Mike,

I worked my way through all the steps in your post and everything seems to be back to normal. All the current items in my start menu are items I recognize and use on a daily basis. I have disabled all the items in the services menu as listed in your suggestions. However I have not been able to recreate the problem, I have disabled and enabled each item but all continues to run fine. Go figure.

On another note I was never able to gain internet access while operating in safe mode. I have a lap top that is wireless operating on a home network that includes 1 hardwired desktop and 2 wireless laptops. No big deal, was just curious.

    Thanks,

    OK Fantastical!

If you were choosing Safe Mode with networking it would not have loaded the wireless services.

Next time for simplicity connect to a cable until fixed!

Sorry to bring up an older thread, but i am having issues, and I ran through the steps, but it has not helped. My son came up the other day, went or did something on the web, downloaded, who knows, hes 15 and thinks he is smart. now my wifes laptop freezes after loading up for a few minutes. gets to the desktop, loads some stuff, and then freezes. it hangs when shutting it down, even in safe mode. safe mode works ok though. I have disabled all startup stuff in msconfig, but it will not take, i am guessing due to the hanging at shutdown of safe mode. these steps did find some stuff, but i still have the problem. any ideas?

    Hi Bob, Target

Target that is good advice from Bob!

But not shutting down in Safe mode is not so good and you are correct it will not apply some things until it shuts down normally.

First lets try a Chkdsk (Scandisk) to see if a disk error is the issue.

    start-run-cmd
    type
    chkdsk /r
(it will ask to do the sacn on the next boot) allow it to do so.
hit enter on keyboard or click OK.

Reboot (the failure to shutdown may cause this to fail).

Fail or not reboot to safe mode with networking. This should allow you Internet access so do the below next.

D/L install and run ATF-Cleaner clear all except passwords in all browsers you have. Run repeatedly until no more found.

    http://www.majorgeeks.com/ATF_Cleaner_d4949.html

D/L and install CCleaner: Clean temps and registry. Run both (temp and registry) repeatedly until no more found. Get Slim at bottom!

    http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds

    D/L Xclean_Micro http://www.xblock.com/download/xclean_micro.exe
No install, run it delete all it finds decline to reboot on each item found, until the program finishes then reboot.

Xclean will run minimized and will pop up a window if it finds anything. If it finds nothing it will exit.

Please make a note of what it found if any as this might indicate a deeper Malware diag.

    Do this and get back!

i'm on it. just a quick note, I have disabled everything in the startup on msconfig. it is now running without freezing in regular mode(not safe mode) however, the shutdown is still hanging. I have also tried to install adaware2008, but i have 2007 already installed, and when it tries to uninstall 2007, it tells me that windows installer in eitehr not installed or not working(i cant remember which) might this be because i have disabled everything in the startup?

    I did the chkdsk thing,
    start-run-cmd
    type
    chkdsk /r
(it will ask to do the sacn on the next boot) allow it to do so.
hit enter on keyboard or click OK.

Reboot (the failure to shutdown may cause this to fail).

and it hung at shutdown, i am starting into safe mode, it went through all of the driver loading stage, but now is not going past the last one, I can hear the hard drive spinning, could chkdsk be running in the background?

Very possible and this could take up to 45 Mins or more if it has to fix something.

If it is running a Chkdsk in the background it would not be a good idea to power off untill it seems a last resort. Powering off during a Chkdsk or Defrag can cause a nightmare!

These procedures I wish done if Safe mode anyway!

But you have partially pinpointed it by disabling all the startups.

Leave all set as it is for now and do the steps!

    Hi Dennis

I am flattered you are trying to be like Mike and not read slow enough!:D

    I jest!

    I am always doing that!:)

    Bob's issue is fixed!

This is now Target's issue. Should have been a new thread but it was a very similar issue so I just took it on!

I didnt realize the computer had come unplugged, and the battery died. upon reboot, it went to the windows xp page, and started a chkdsk.
at stage 4 of 5, verifying file data, it is at 6 percent complete, and has not continued on for about 5 mins, the hard drive seems to be speeding up, then slowing down, and so on and so on.
