I recently (stupidly) downloaded a program from kazaa. I've
since uninstalled it because I didn't feel right about it,but I've
had this feeling that something just isn't right when I'm
    online.

I'm worried I installed a trojan when I installed the program, and somehow it's found a way to work around my norton
    Internet security.

I ran virus scan, which I'm not sure detects trojans are not, and downloaded the trial version of Zone Alarm 3 and installed that.

I guess my question is, if there is a trojan already on my harddrive, and it has found a way to work around my Norton.
Will my fresh install of Zone Alarm alert me?

    Thanks

Question: what makes you think that your system has a trojan?

AV's do detect trojans (in fact, some are better at it than certain dedicated AT's) so there's a good chance that your system is "clean ". If you want to double-check, try running the scans here and here.

Yes - as would NPF! Running both simultaneously is really not a good idea.

Okay...thanks Brett. By the way, my Norton Internet is about to
expire and I'm thinking about going with Zone Alarm this time, because I've heard a lot of good things about it. Which one do you like?

Oh...I just noticed you asked me why I think I have a trojan.

Well, two things were making me nervous. One is, I haven't had
a trojan alert in almost a month now. I used to get one about every week.

Second, today while I was online, a program (magic notes) that
I use to store my passwords started by itself for some reason.

    I hope I'm just paranoid:)

The auto-launch of the passwords program sounds a little strange - run the scans ASAP!

Have a look at this thread re: firewalls.

I did...as soon as I saw that happen, I got offline, ran a scan, got
    back online,searched BBS for suggestions,downloaded a freeware
called ANTS(a freeware trojan scanning program) that I learned about, got back offline, ran that(no trojans detected), got back online, downloaded Zone Alarm, got back offline...anyway, I
    think you get the picture...lol

I took a look at your link...I'll check out Kerio, and I appreciate
    all your help. Thanks! :D

Breakout - Kazaa is known to contain a bit of spyware which an AV program won't find since it isn't really a virus. You can download Ad-aware which will do a nice job of detecting and removing spyware from your PC.

And when you spoke of Norton expiring and replacing with ZA, I hope you were only speaking of the firewall part since none of the firewall products will protect you from a virus.

Hi Newt...Yea, I knew about the spyware with kazaa. I purchased
Ad-aware plus a couple of weeks ago, so I'm pretty much covered
    on that end.

Actually, I have Norton anti-virus and Norton Internet Security and
    they both expire next week.

I downloaded Kerio as brett suggested and it's working great as
    a firewall.

I didn't even think about Kerio not being able to block viruses.

Does Kerio tell you when it's blocking a trojan? If it does,I'll
just keep kerio and update my norton anti-virus, unless you
know of a better virus protection. Thanks for mentioning that,I
wasn't even thinking kerio won't block a virus.:)

All "application gate" type firewalls (such as NPF, KPF, ZAP, etc) will alert you whenever any application (or trojan!) attempts to establish a connection to the internet and prompt you to confirm whether or not that application (or trojan!) should be allowed to estblish the connection. It's important, therefore, to be careful when granting permissions (Internet Explorer should obviously be allowed - NastyBackdoorPasswordStealer should not be allowed!).

So, whilst a firewall will preventing a trojan from "leaking" information, it will not prevent it from getting onto your system nor will it get rid of it. That's where your AV program comes into play. You should, therefore, either pay to keep NAV or switch to a freebie such as AVG (which is actually quite good).

ROFLMAO - the combination of Texas and Mail brought back a memory from Viet Nam days.

A Marine from Texas was stationed with me in Chu Lai. His wife shipped him a "care" package via surface mail. Spring time and she knew his tastes so had carefully (and completely and tightly) wrapped 2 quarts of fresh strawberries for him.

3 months in the heat of a ship's hold, some bouncing in a truck, and the package finally blew up in our mail room. We had fermented strawberry juice on EVERYTHING in the place.
