Hi, I just setup a PC with XP SP3, problem is Windows Firewall will not start.
Windows Firewall in Control Panel gives me the following:
Windows Firewall settings cannot be displayed because the associated service is not running. Do you want to start the Windows Firewall / Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service.
I never had to that in SP2 before.

    Hi Hawk

This will shotgun to confirm all dlls winupdate and firewall!

    Download Dial-A-Fix (DAF)
    http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix#...C_and_articles

Have XP CD available in case DAF needs a file. Likely not!

Check all boxes on the screen (clear any restrictions if it shows any)
    Then click GO!

When the entire page is finished click the HammerHead at bottom to go to the second DAF page.

Here 1 at a time do the below

    Reinstall BITS
    Reinstall Windows Firewall
    Repair Permissions
    Reset networking
Watch for any File not found or other errors and make note as this may lead to the fix!

    Reboot retest!

    Let us know!

    Mike

Did you try (re)starting the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service? Are you using a 3rd party firewall?

Hi thanks Mike, Arie, no I have not, as I was not sure about ICS, what that is all about.
Like I pointed out I never had to do that before, that's why I thought I ask first. And no I am not using any other Firewall. You are saying it is ok.

    Hi Hawk

Well did DAF repair the Firewall?

On the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)
this just the way it is named in Windows Services.

For sure if you turn off the Firewall then ICS goes also, but ICS can be turned off seperately.

Usually it is only if you have 2 or more network connections. This will show up in the Network connections folder, if there are other icons in this folder besides Local Area Connection then ICS is available.

ICS is turned off/on in the Advanced properties of the Local Area network icon.

    Here found this for you:

You should start by (trying to) restarting the service indicated. Without the service running the firewall won't work.

    Sorry forgot!

Internet Connection Sharing, another way to get other computers on the LAN to connect to the internet.

An option to use as a last resort.

You should not need it if you have a router!
